Goodbye to old tat The second-hand shops and stalls of Portobello Market have always been about the ability to sort through the jumble and dig out a nugget of wardrobe gold. No kind of shopping better suits an age of austerity and recycling. When I saw a dress that could have passed for one of John Galliano’s early creations, slippery creamy satin and cut on the bias, I wondered, out loud, how much it cost. “Very expensive. £3,000. It’s 1930s,” said the older lady sitting behind a beaten-up desk. The withering smile and superiority took me back 20 years to when I fi rst stuck my nose round the designer doors of Sloane Street. Here, in the comfort of my own neighbourhood, and now a grown-up lady, I was being spoken to like a tramp who had wandered into The Ritz. Kate Moss famously wore a vintage dress very like this one to some event at the Natural History Museum and was snapped wearing it tucked into her knickers by the end of the night because it had disintegrated. Vintage clothing does have a habit of simply falling apart, which doesn’t happen with antique chairs. What happened to second-hand clothes? When did they shift to the apex of clothing desirability somewhere below haute couture and Balenciaga, but signifi cantly above most of the blue-chip designers? During fashion week the international fashion mob will make a hajj to the admittedly brilliant Rellik (where I fatally bought a gross fl oaty lilac nylon dress by some thankfully long-gone label for geriatrics). Vintage is offi cially more fashiony than fashion now. Anyone can buy fashion. Vintage takes a certain savoir faire to buy wisely, dahling. This precious attitude to second-hand clothes has its roots in wanting great workmanship, originality and a bit of a bargain. But now vintage has become a marketing scam. Every bit of workaday second-hand tat is vintage now, served up on crammed rails and not very cheaply. The desperate irony is that now it’s cheaper to buy nice-smelling new clothes than smelly old ones. Kate Spicer writes for Sunday Times Style. Une façon d’acheter bien en phase avec l’air du temps, épris d’austérité et de recyclage. Un jour, mon chemin y a croisé celui d’une robe qui aurait pu appartenir à l’univers d’un jeune Galliano. Hypnotisée par son satin soyeux coupé dans le biais, je me surprends à m’interroger à voix haute sur son prix. Assise à un bureau antédiluvien, une dame d’âge mûr me toise avec un petit sourire suffi sant avant de lâcher « 3 000 £. C’est une robe des années 1930. » C’est un comble, au cœur de mon propre quartier, on me parle à nouveau comme à une jeunette qui s’aventurerait, inconsciente, dans les boutiques de créateurs de Sloane Street ! L’espace d’un instant, je me sens un peu comme un clochard qui se serait égaré au Ritz. Kate Moss a porté une petite robe vintage similaire à celle-ci lors d’un gala au Natural History Museum. Vous souvenez-vous de cette photo où l’on voit cette robe rentrée dans ses sous-vêtements suite à sa désintégration ? Contrairement à leurs cousins meubles antiques, les vêtements vintage ont cette fâcheuse habitude de tomber en lambeaux. Pour une raison obscure, les vêtements d’occasion se sont mués en Graal de la mode, quelque part entre la hautecouture façon Balenciaga et les marques en vogue. Chaque fashion week voit la même transhumance de hordes de fashionista vers Rellik, cette boutique merveilleuse où j’ai malencontreusement succombé à une repoussante robe vaporeuse en nylon mauve, vestige d’une marque pour troisième âge, heureusement disparue. Le vintage est hype : si n’importe qui peut s’habiller mode, acheter vintage nécessite en revanche un certain fl air, darling. Bien sûr, à la base, acheter d’occasion était censé nous donner savoir-faire et originalité, sans parler de prix abordables. Mais le vintage a maintenant pris l’allure d’une douteuse opération de marketing. Vendue à prix d’or sur des cintres en rangs serrés, même la plus banale des fripes est à présent vintage. N’est-il pas ironique que nous soyons prêts à payer plus cher de vieux vêtements malodorants que leurs petits frères immaculés ? METROPOLITAN 7
