collectors that were crucial in creating the
conditions that gave rise to London’s YBAs in the
1990s. “For the last fi ve years or so we have had all
that – Perrotin, Yvon Lambert – so the French art
world has been able to bring these artists to the
international scene,” says Wahler.
Emmanuel Perrotin, labelled “Gagosian à la
française” by the press for the way he snagged
Damien Hirst’s solo show back when he was working
from his studio bedroom and gamely stalked and
cajoled his way to a roster of heavyweight
contemporary artists, has been instrumental in
transforming the city’s international face.
Although the mischievous dealer claims that his
namesake’s arrival “proves I was not in fact Gagosian,
just a garden gnome in comparison”, his activities
suggest otherwise. As well as the important Marais
gallery at 76 rue de Turenne (expanding upstairs
to a total 1,500 square metres this month) and the
pioneering Miami outpost, Perrotin is
also synonymous with the kind of
exclusive entertainment that the art
world increasingly demands. Like a
hipster version of the Pompidou Metz
satellite or Louvre Abu Dhabi, his Le
Baron night with video artists Kolkoz
during the Miami/Basel art fair heralds
the clout of cool Paris nightlife.
Patrice Joly, who is one of those
behind this month’s inaugural
Belleville Biennale, sees this
international fl air as characteristic
of the new generation. “Just as with
the galleries, the sexiest French artists
are those who are most comfortable abroad,” he
says. “They’re really breaking through: Benoît Maire
in New York and Gaillard around the world.”
Gaillard, a multimedia artist whose work plumbs
the ruins of decayed modernist landscapes, is one
of many artists represented by Belleville galleries
and in contention for major prizes at FIAC.
The once-shabby, working-class Belleville reached
a tipping point at the end of last year. “When I arrived
alongside my neighbour Marcelle Alix, there were
suddenly eight galleries and the Plateau (Île de
France’s contemporary art collection), which really
counts in Paris,” explains Axel Dibie, co-director of
Galerie Crèvecoeur. “From that moment on there
were articles in newspapers and magazines.”
At 28, Dibie is the new kid on the block, and
profi ting from what he calls the “effect of being on
the circuit”. He’s already received the director of
the Basel art fair at his gallery, and important
collectors brought in by the well-established

quinze ans, ces grosses expos avaient pour but de
promouvoir l’art national, mais ça ne marchait
jamais parce qu’elles essayaient de rassembler
trop d’artistes différents. Les gens se moquaient
des tentatives grossières du gouvernement pour
promouvoir les artistes français. »
Une partie du problème venait du fait qu’il
manquait à Paris les galeries internationales,
conservateurs, critiques et collectionneurs qui
créèrent les conditions pour la percée des jeunes
artistes britannique (YBA) de Londres dans les
années 90. « Ces cinq dernières années, on a
tout ça, Perrotin, Yvon Lambert, donc le monde
de l’art peut porter ces artistes sur la scène
internationale », dit Wahler.
Emmanuel Perrotin, surnommé « Gagosian

exposer le solo show de Damien Hirst dans sa
chambre-galerie et s’être constitué, avec force
détermination et cajoleries, un catalogue de poids
lourds de l’art contemporain, a contribué à la
transformation de la ville.
Bien qu’il prétende que l’arrivée de l’original
« prouve que je n’étais pas Gagosian, juste un nain
de jardin en comparaison », ses activités disent
tout autre chose. Entre une galerie dans le Marais
rue de Turenne (qui s’étend à l’étage ce mois-ci
pour une superfi cie totale de 1 500 m 2 ) et un poste
avancé à Miami, Perrotin est aussi synonyme
des divertissements exclusifs dont le monde de
l’art est friand. Version tendance du satellite de
Pompidou à Metz ou du Louvre Abou Dabi, les
soirées du Baron qu’il monte avec les artistes
vidéo Kolkoz pendant la foire d’art Miami/Basel
célèbrent les nuits parisiennes branchées.
