extr<strong>in</strong>sic stack<strong>in</strong>g faults are <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>verse <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic and relates to <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>sertion <strong>of</strong> an<br />

extra layer between two exist<strong>in</strong>g layers as <strong>in</strong> Fig. 2.15(b) where an A layer has been<br />

<strong>in</strong>serted between a C and B.<br />

Fig. 2.16. A description <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> modification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stack<strong>in</strong>g sequence <strong>in</strong> a lattice due to<br />

<strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic and extr<strong>in</strong>sic stack<strong>in</strong>g faults (from Käckell et al. (1998))<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore if an <strong>in</strong>tr<strong>in</strong>sic stack<strong>in</strong>g fault is <strong>in</strong>troduced by <strong>the</strong> removal <strong>of</strong> a B layer for<br />

example, it creates a stack<strong>in</strong>g sequence ABCA/CABC which correlates to only one<br />

modified layer (Fig. 2.16.). When a C layer for example is <strong>in</strong>serted between an A and<br />

B such as <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> an extr<strong>in</strong>sic stack<strong>in</strong>g fault it creates a stack<strong>in</strong>g sequence<br />

ABCA/C/BCABC which implies <strong>the</strong> modification <strong>of</strong> two layers.
