National Policy: The country of Tanzania, as a party to the Lomé Convention,<br />
totally bans waste shipments to its territory. Tanzania is both a<br />
signatory and has ratified the Bamako Convention which bans<br />
the import of hazardous waste.<br />
In October 1988 the government of Tanzania formed a task force<br />
to prevent the import of foreign wastes. According to Tanzania’s<br />
National Environmental Management Council, “although<br />
Tanzania has always been on the alert against the disposal of<br />
nuclear and other hazardous wastes, the task force will ensure<br />
that the country will not be used as a dumping ground.” The task<br />
force members include government officials as well as experts in<br />
the fields of science, marine studies, and tropical pesticides. 212<br />
