The first vessel, MV Arion 1, was escorted out of Nigerian waters<br />

after being detained for 17 days. There was no indication where<br />

the beef was headed next.<br />

In another battle against an onslaught of toxic waste, expired and<br />

contaminated food, and hazardous consumer goods, the Nigerian<br />

government banned the importation of toxic mosquito coils. The<br />

toxic mosquito coils were another in a long list of dangerous<br />

wastes exported as “useful products” to Nigeria. Col. Anthony<br />

Etukudo of the Standards Organization of Nigeria announced the<br />

ban, saying that “the government was worried by the rate at<br />

which all manner of toxic substances were being dumped in the<br />

country.” 168<br />
