amboo forests are not maintained. In former times, the Wakamatsu ward was an isl<strong>and</strong>. Still these days<br />
Wakamatsu ward is surrounded by water; in the north by the Hibiki Nada Sea, in the south <strong>and</strong> east by the Dokai<br />
bay, in the west by the Onga River, <strong>and</strong> in the southwest by the Egawa River. The Wakamatsu ward can be<br />
divided into 5 zones, as is shown on the map (figure 3).<br />

The 5 zones are;<br />
Zone 1: The old ward center, which is located in the eastern part of Wakamatsu. In this part of the ward are left<br />
many old buildings, some of them do have a high historical value.<br />
Zone 2: In the south, an old industrial area along the northern shore of the Dokai bay.<br />
Zone 3: In the west, a new residential area <strong>and</strong> academic zone, within the center of it the Kitakyushu Science<br />
<strong>and</strong> Research Park.<br />
Zone 4: In the north, the Wakamatsu seashore area, with a new hub port <strong>and</strong> the so-called Ecotown, an industrial<br />
area where industries related to recycle techniques are located.<br />
