Zone 5: The most central part of the Wakamatsu ward has a rich abundant nature. This area can be split up in a<br />

western <strong>and</strong> eastern part. The western part is mainly occupied by agricultural l<strong>and</strong>. The eastern part has plenty of<br />

beautiful mountains with the Ishimine Mountain <strong>and</strong> Takato Mountain as the one with the highest peaks. The<br />

bamboo forests are mainly situated in the zones 3 <strong>and</strong> 5 (figure 4).<br />

Bamboo Preservation through participation of local citizens in Kitakyushu<br />

In recent years, the role <strong>and</strong> participation of local citizens in sustainable community planning has become more<br />

<strong>and</strong> more important because the improvement of our environment cannot any longer be realized only on a<br />

scientific level, but through participation of local government, local industries, research institutes <strong>and</strong> local<br />

grassroots organizations. Also the problem of thinning out <strong>and</strong> maintaining the bamboo forests must be<br />

undertaken through a good collaboration between bamboo forest owners, local government, local industry <strong>and</strong><br />

the local citizens.<br />
