Besides the environmental preservation activities (EPA) <strong>and</strong> other activities mentioned in table 1, bamboo forest<br />

maintenance activities are undertaken every second Saturday of each month. Since January 2004, except for the<br />

month of August, on every second Saturday of the month, a small group of citizens has started to preserve the<br />

bamboo forests in the area around the Kitakyushu Science <strong>and</strong> Research Park. The cut bamboos are chipped <strong>and</strong><br />

these chips are used for soil making products, as well as for the making of bamboo charcoal. The cut bamboo<br />

material is also used in all the activities mentioned in table 1. A part of the bamboo material was also used for<br />

bamboo objects, small artistic objects made by the students of the University of Kitakyushu.<br />
