immigrants function. Such services should be accessible,<br />
affordable, and culturally and l<strong>in</strong>guistically appropriate. To<br />
promote this standard <strong>of</strong> care, <strong>the</strong> task force recommends<br />
that APA:<br />
• Support opportunities for <strong>the</strong> shar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> practice<br />
methods and <strong>the</strong>ories with<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> field <strong>of</strong> psychology<br />
that are developed to address <strong>the</strong> special needs <strong>of</strong><br />
immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals and <strong>the</strong>ir families across<br />
<strong>the</strong> life span, recogniz<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>re may be methods<br />
<strong>of</strong> treatment that <strong>in</strong>corporate culturally syntonic<br />
techniques <strong>in</strong>to practice.<br />
• Advocate for <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> comprehensive,<br />
community- and school-based mental health programs<br />
and <strong>in</strong>terventions that demonstrate cl<strong>in</strong>ical effectiveness<br />
with immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> children and adolescents.<br />
• Support and advocate for federal policy <strong>in</strong>itiatives<br />
that assist <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> adjustment and self-sufficiency <strong>of</strong><br />
immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> adults (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g older adults),<br />
children and adolescents, and families.<br />
• Advocate for <strong>in</strong>itiatives that provide case-management<br />
services for immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals across <strong>the</strong><br />
life span that address basic needs and access to essential<br />
resources (e.g., physical health care, mental and<br />
behavioral health care, job placement, and hous<strong>in</strong>g).<br />
• Support <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> and access to a range <strong>of</strong><br />
services for unaccompanied immigrant m<strong>in</strong>ors, such as<br />
physical and mental health services, adequate hous<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and provision <strong>of</strong> daily needs, and school placement and<br />
support.<br />
• Support <strong>the</strong> development and dissem<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong><br />
culturally and l<strong>in</strong>guistically appropriate evidence<strong>in</strong>formed<br />
practices for prevention, <strong>in</strong>tervention, and<br />
treatment <strong>of</strong> mental and behavioral health problems<br />
among immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals across <strong>the</strong> life span<br />
<strong>in</strong> both traditional and nontraditional sett<strong>in</strong>gs (e.g.,<br />
home, community, school, and detention facilities).<br />
Education and Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
To significantly improve and enhance education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
opportunities related to immigrant issues for students <strong>in</strong><br />
psychology and encourage education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for, and<br />
retention <strong>of</strong>, pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who work with immigrant adults<br />
Summary <strong>of</strong> Recommendations<br />
and children across <strong>the</strong> life span, <strong>the</strong> task force recommends<br />
that APA:<br />
• Promote education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g on methods to<br />
ensure that research and assessment are conducted <strong>in</strong> a<br />
culturally competent manner.<br />
• Cont<strong>in</strong>ue to promote psychology education and<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> multicultural practice and research.<br />
• Advocate for federal policy <strong>in</strong>itiatives that support<br />
education and tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g opportunities <strong>in</strong> psychology to<br />
work with diverse populations such as:<br />
J M<strong>in</strong>ority Fellowship Program: Tra<strong>in</strong> immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong><br />
m<strong>in</strong>ority mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals to provide<br />
culturally and l<strong>in</strong>guistically competent and accessible<br />
mental health services for diverse populations.<br />
J Graduate <strong>Psychology</strong> Education Program: Support <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> psychology graduate<br />
students while <strong>the</strong> students provide supervised<br />
mental and behavioral health services to underserved<br />
populations (e.g., immigrant populations, o<strong>the</strong>r diverse<br />
populations, and victims <strong>of</strong> abuse and trauma).<br />
• Encourage cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g education programs for practic<strong>in</strong>g<br />
psychologists and mental health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals that <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation on multicultural practice and <strong>the</strong> importance<br />
<strong>of</strong> effective collaboration between psychologists and<br />
<strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary colleagues, resource agencies, community<br />
leaders, parapr<strong>of</strong>essionals, and cultural brokers to address<br />
<strong>the</strong> needs and strengths <strong>of</strong> immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir families across <strong>the</strong> life span.<br />
• Provide tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and effective supports to teachers and<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r service providers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fields serv<strong>in</strong>g immigrant<br />
populations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g prejudice reduction.<br />
• Support policies and practices <strong>in</strong> test<strong>in</strong>g and assessment<br />
<strong>of</strong> immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals consistent with APA’s<br />
standards for educational and psychological test<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Collaboration and advocacy<br />
To improve collaboration and advocacy between and<br />
among <strong>in</strong>dividuals, organizations, and systems that provide<br />
care to immigrant-orig<strong>in</strong> adults (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g older adults),<br />
children and adolescents, and families <strong>in</strong> need, <strong>the</strong> task force<br />
