Very like H. pretus, bnt l<strong>on</strong>ger in <strong>the</strong> wing and much deeper in colour ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> head yellow, <strong>with</strong> a transverse black line <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> crest; collar<br />

yellow, margined <strong>with</strong> black ; pterygodcs plum-colour, margined<br />

<strong>with</strong> orange ; thorax clay-coloiired, smoky brown in fr<strong>on</strong>t and behind;<br />

basal segment <strong>of</strong> abdomen purple in fr<strong>on</strong>t, lem<strong>on</strong>-yellow behind; o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

segments dark clay-colour ; sec<strong>on</strong>d segment purplish opaline in fr<strong>on</strong>t<br />

and at <strong>the</strong> sides, <strong>with</strong> a very sleuder yellowish hind margin ; third<br />

segment pale yellow at <strong>the</strong> sides behind; fourth to seventh very nar-<br />

rowly rosy at <strong>the</strong> sides; antennoe deep clay.colourcd, <strong>with</strong> a black<br />

band just hey<strong>on</strong>cl <strong>the</strong> middlc ; oiiter half <strong>of</strong> primaries and sec<strong>on</strong>daries<br />

dark clay-colour, basal area <strong>of</strong> primaries briglit clay-colour ; wings<br />

below <strong>with</strong> basal area ochraceous ; pectus blackish ; cox= purplish,<br />

<strong>with</strong> n white margin ; trorhanters bright yellow ; femora purplish date-<br />

coloiir ; tibile and tarsi ochreous, last pair <strong>of</strong> tibia: black at <strong>the</strong> proxi-<br />

mal extremity : expanse <strong>of</strong> wings 41 millime.<br />

This magnificent hornet .like species is evidently nearly allied<br />

to <strong>the</strong> genus Hornma; it also has many characters in cominou<br />

<strong>with</strong> Isanthrene : <strong>the</strong> wings are semi-opnque, so that it forms a<br />

good transiti<strong>on</strong> from tlie opaque-winged to <strong>the</strong> clear-winged<br />

group.<br />
