Present Status <strong>of</strong> Ultra-intense Lasers and High-Field Physics in the World INTRODUCTION It is the 50 th year anniversary <strong>of</strong> the invention by Theodor Maiman, who demonstrated laser generation in 1960 with a ruby rod as shown in Fig. 1. At that time, most <strong>of</strong> scientists believed that the gas is the best for lasing media, while Maiman took a different way against all and succeeded to be the first runner in this big race. Fig. 1 Maiman and his world first laser made <strong>of</strong> Ruby rod. It was June in 1960. In the last fifty years, the scale, power, and focused intensity dramatically increased from 1kW to 10 PW, the 12 order <strong>of</strong> magnitude increase. The laser is now widely used in fundamental and applied science. In addition, the laser is also used for many devices in commercial goods. In the present paper, we focus on the highest intensity laser at the present time and to be constructed in the near future and discuss about what kind <strong>of</strong> extreme experiment we can do. The vacuum breakdown and resultant highly-relativistic electron-positron pair plasma production are main topics <strong>of</strong> this paper. We have reached the intensity <strong>of</strong> 2.2×10 22 W/cm 2 <strong>of</strong> focused laser at Univ. Michigan [1]. The electric field <strong>of</strong> this intensity is 1.4× 10 12 V/cm. The energy <strong>of</strong> an oscillating electron in this electric field can be calculated to be 10 2 mc 2 . It is natural that with the appearance <strong>of</strong> such strong lasers wishes to carry out a variety <strong>of</strong> experiments related to Non-liner QED and QCD. H. Takabe, ILE, Osaka University, Japan In the present paper, we review the present status <strong>of</strong> existing and planned ultra-intense laser facilities in the world at first, and describe the physics scenario <strong>of</strong> the production <strong>of</strong> electron pair plasma. It is mentioned that when the laser intensity becomes 100 times the present record and it becomes above 10 24 W/cm 2 , vacuum breakdown becomes essential to creation <strong>of</strong> highly relativistic electron pair plasma. The avalanche effect enhances the pair creation <strong>of</strong> the vacuum. M U -PW L LASERS T I IN THE WORLD A great progress in constructing 10 PW laser systems in Europe is going by the leadership <strong>of</strong> G. Mourou, the founder <strong>of</strong> the pulse compression technique with CPA [2]. It is amazing that EU decided to fund three 10 PW laser facilities in the EU member countries <strong>of</strong> the East Europe, Czech, Hungary, and Romania. Total budget for construction is about 800 M Euro. Laser property <strong>of</strong> each <strong>of</strong> them is almost same but with different main subjects [3]. Czech’s aims at high-brightness sources <strong>of</strong> x-rays and particles[4], Hungary’s atto-second XUV/X-ray source and its application [5], and Romania’s laser-induced nuclear physics[6]. They are three ELI modules and the site selection was done on October 1, 2009. They will also play important role in technology development for constructing 200PW laser system ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) [7]. It is announced that the technology and site <strong>of</strong> ELI are to be determined after 2012. On the other hand, UK will construct 10 PW system by modifying and expand the present Vulcan laser system and it will be completed due by 2014-15 [8]. France plans to construct a single beam 10 PW laser APOLLON as international collaboration system with main contribution by three institutions, LULI, LOA, and Institute <strong>of</strong> Optics and it will be completed due by 2012-13. Vulcan is <strong>of</strong> 300J, 30fs, 1shot/15 min, and APPLLON is <strong>of</strong> 150J, 15 fs, 1shot/min. In Asia, APRI in Korea has 1PW laser system with 47 J/30fs at 0.1 Hz [9]. In Japan, 1 PW laser is in Kansai-J A E [10] A and 10 PW laser LFEX with 10 kJ/ 1ps single shot base [1 1] is under construction in Osaka University.
