The land area <strong>of</strong> Hampton Roads includes dozens <strong>of</strong> cities, counties and towns on<br />
the Virginia Peninsula and in South Hampton Roads with an estimated population in 2006 <strong>of</strong><br />
1.5 million (U.S. Bureau <strong>of</strong> the Census 2000). Hampton Roads is within the Atlantic Coastal<br />
Plain physiographic province. The maj<strong>or</strong>ity <strong>of</strong> this region <strong>of</strong> the state is coastal lowlands<br />
with elevations from 60'-250'. The western p<strong>or</strong>tion <strong>of</strong> this region is coastal uplands, broad<br />
upland with low slopes and gentle drainage divides. A p<strong>or</strong>tion <strong>of</strong> this region is composed <strong>of</strong><br />
barrier islands and salt marshes (low, open areas covered with sediment and vegetation in<br />
direct proximity to the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean) (Roberts and Bailey 2000,<br />
Grymes 2009).<br />
Suitable habitat (e.g., tidal and freshwater creeks, canals and f<strong>or</strong>ested wetlands, ditch<br />
netw<strong>or</strong>ks to allow f<strong>or</strong> agriculture) is available in Hampton Roads f<strong>or</strong> a broad range <strong>of</strong><br />
mosquito species.<br />
The Richmond-Petersburg region is located in a central part <strong>of</strong> the state. It<br />
straddles the fall line, the meeting zone <strong>of</strong> the Coastal Plain (coastal lowland and upland) and<br />
the Piedmont on the James River at Richmond and the Appomattox River at Petersburg<br />
(Netstate 2007). The area is composed <strong>of</strong> four independent cities (listed in <strong>or</strong>der <strong>of</strong><br />
population): Richmond, Petersburg, Hopewell, and Colonial Heights. The counties within<br />
this region include Charles City, Chesterfield, Dinwiddie, Goochland, Hanover, Henrico,<br />
New Kent, Powhatan, and Prince Ge<strong>or</strong>ge. As <strong>of</strong> 2006, the Richmond-Petersburg region had<br />
a population <strong>of</strong> 1,081,753 (U.S. Bureau <strong>of</strong> the Census 2000).<br />
In the Richmond-Petersburg region as well as the N<strong>or</strong>thern Virginia and Hampton<br />
Roads regions, the close proximity <strong>of</strong> good mosquito habitat threaded within and among high<br />
