MANAGEMENT OF<br />
HEALTHCARE WASTE<br />
<strong>Waste</strong> generated by healthcare<br />
institutions is broadly classified into<br />
two categories:<br />
• General waste (non-hazardous<br />
waste)<br />
• Medical waste (hazardous waste).<br />
Medical waste is further classified into<br />
infectious waste, pathological waste,<br />
sharps, pharmaceutical waste,<br />
genotoxic waste, chemical waste,<br />
pressurized containers and radioactive<br />
waste as shown in the Figure on the<br />
right.<br />
A study on healthcare waste<br />
management was conducted by the<br />
Cambodia <strong>Environment</strong> Association during<br />
April-May 2003. Supported by the Japan<br />
International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the<br />
survey was conducted in 41 medical<br />
institutions in Phnom Penh covering four<br />
major categories of healthcare institutions<br />
including 12 hospitals, 14 polyclinics, 9 clinics,<br />
and 6 health centers.<br />
This study estimates a total healthcare waste<br />
generation of about 306 kg/day. Table (right)<br />
presents waste generation rates for the<br />
different types of healthcare facilities studied.<br />
