All hospital managers and concession<br />

The Department of National Solid <strong>Waste</strong><br />

Management under the Ministry of Housing<br />

and Local Government is responsible for the<br />

management of general waste.<br />

Solid <strong>Waste</strong> Management<br />

Malaysian Nuclear Agency (MNA) and<br />

Atomic Energy Licensing Board (AELB) are<br />

the two main agencies that manage the<br />

disposal of radioactive waste under the<br />

Atomic Energy Licensing Act 1984; but the<br />

monitoring and licensing of all the radioactive<br />

medical devices in healthcare facilities are<br />

given to MoH through delegation of powers<br />

provided under the same act. Radioactive<br />

waste is being managed by the respective<br />

suppliers regulated by the AELB. Nuclear<br />

Malaysia Training Centre within MNA<br />

provides training programs on Radiation<br />

Safety and <strong>Health</strong>, <strong>Environment</strong>al Safety and<br />

<strong>Health</strong> and Medical X-ray based on demand<br />

and needs of the relevant organizations.<br />

The institutional setup governing healthcare<br />

waste in Malaysia is presented in the Figure<br />

above.<br />
