It is apparent from the information
developed in several recent surveys
that the public's interest in home record
reproduction has dr( pped to a
very low level in television areas. The
public will probably have :o be given
a good, strong treatment of hi -fi indoctrination
to recapture its interest
in recorded music.
College TV Service Seminar
Ten member- companie of the
Radio -Television Manufacturers Association
contributed equi)ment and
personnel for use in a television service
technician training st minar recently
conducted at the Iowa State
College at Ames, Iowa. The industry's
activities in the seminar were coordinated
by W. L. Parkinson of the
General Electric Company; a former
RTMA Service Committee chairman.
The course, which was E upplementary
to the present training offered
by other schools and the industry,
was limited to 50 experien _ed television
service technicians. It was conducted
as part of the activities of
the Engineering Extension Service at
Iowa State College. A one -week break
in the two -week course was provided
so that students could attend without
too much interruption in their
regular business activities.
RTMA member companies participating
in the seminar included: General
Electric Company; Alien B. Du
Mont Laboratories, Inc.; Capehart-
Farnsworth Corporation; Motorola
Inc.; Crosley Division of the Avco
Manufacturing Corp.; Phila Corporation;
Howard W. Sams d Co., Inc.;
Sylvania Electric Products 'nc.; John
F. Rider Publisher, Inc.; and the Radio
Corporation of America.
Educational Television
Dr. W. R. G. Baker, vice -president
of the General Electric Company, recently
urged the adoption of a system
of educational television in New York
State as an economic necessity vital
to the security of the United States.
Dr. Baker told the state commission
on educational television that "if
the great state of New York does not
take the leadership in setting an example
for the other 47 states, the
benefits of effective educational television
may be lost to the na ion."
Television channels which were set
aside for educational televis on carry
a "time" element in the a locations
plan. In setting aside cert;:in channels
for noncommercial use the Federal
Communications Commission
stated that if action was rot taken
to build and operate stations on these
channels within a reasonab: a period
of time they would revert to the
status of channels available for commercial
use.
Although Benjamin Abrams, president
of the Emerson Radio d Phonograph
Company, and the Fo:-d Foundation
both set up substar tial endowments
to encourage the construction
of stations for educatir nal TV,
interest in the development of these
stations has been lethargic.
