W ith the final departure of the Romans fr om Britain about 502 A.D., there
came to the west coasts of North Britain, th e Scots-a Celtic or Gallic people
fr om the North of Ireland, then known as Scotia (la nd of the Scots) . In makin g
perm anent settlements in th e Western H ighlands the Scots waged war for centuries
with th e Picts for mastery thereof. Th e leader s of the Scots wer e three
br others : Fergus, Lorn, and Angus, whose descendant s formed the Scoto-Irish
Dynasty of Kings, who ruled over the Scots. At first the Scots brought over
only 150 men. Th e last Kin g of thi s dynasty was Kin g Alpin, Kin g of Argyle
shire, Scotland ( reigned 831 to 834). Hi s fath er was the Scottish King Archius,
Kin g of A rgy le shire, Scotland, and whose mother was Urgus ia, daughter of King
Urguis of the Picts. Ref. (S ir Walter Scott and John O'Hart) . Kin g Alpin ,
the 29th descendant from K ing Fergus II , of Scotland, reigned 413 to 419.
King Alpin died 834 and was succeeded by his eldest son, Kenneth II, and
became th e first sole Kin g of Scotland. H e accomplished this by establishing the
union of th e Picts and Scots, adopting Scone, the capita l of the Picts as the seat
of his government. He reigned 834 to 854.
King Alpin's 3rd son was Gregor. ( Ref. #4) Adam s says-"Royal is my
Ra ce," is the motto of this ancient Clan, the senior one of Clan Alpin , the most
glorious and most unf ortunate. It s chiefs claim descent fro m Grig or Gregory
( Grigar-fierce), 3rd son of Alpin. ( Ref. # 6) Sir Walter Scott says-T he Sept
MacGregor , claimed a descent fr om Gre gor or Gregorius, 3rd Son of King Alpin
King of Scots, who flouri shed about 878 A.D., hence their original patronymic is
MacAlpin, and they ar e usually called Clan Alpin ; and an individual tribe of them
retains the same name. They ar e accounted one of the ancient Clans in the
Highlands, and it is certain th ey are a people of orig inal Celtic descent, and occupied
at one period very ext ensive possessions in Perth and Arglesshire, Scotland.
In th is bri ef history, the line of succession is followed by generation, giving
to the Chief in the line of our MacGregor chiefs' descent the generation number
in Roman numerals. This succession is then the blood line in direct descent to our
