referred to as the son of James, son of John MacGregor.<br />

Dun can MacGregor , called Abberac h, eldest and heir, was eventually<br />

slain himself, at Bentoig 1604, by Robert Campbell, son of<br />

Duncan Campbell, of Glenurchy. Duncan, of fine appearance and<br />

reputation, became very powerful. Hi s mothe r's friends had tri ed<br />

to save him fr om a like fate after the murd er of his father, Gr egor ;<br />

and grandfather, Duncan Ladosach, by hurrying him into Lochaber,<br />

while his two brothers were carried into Athol and Strathearn.<br />

Dun can m. Istly Chris tian MacDonald , dau. of MacD onald of<br />

Keppock, and had a son who died young. H e m. 2ndly a dau. of<br />

the MacFarlans, of that ilk, a descendant of the noble family<br />

of Lenox. By her Duncan had three sons:<br />

1. Patrick (Abrach ) MacGregor , his heir and eldest son s. and<br />

carried on the representation, from whom the MacGregor<br />

chiefs are desc.<br />

2. Robert MacGregor , a man of rare martial genius, laid the<br />

plan for attac king the Colquhouns at Glen Fruin, and his<br />

sword is prese rved to this day at the seat of the present Chief<br />

at Edenchip, Lochea rnhead, Perth shire. H e was called Ramsy.<br />

Upon being released from priso n, he was reported to Sir<br />

Donald MacKay in 1626 to be banished and sent to the wars<br />

overseas .<br />

3. Alpin who had issue of whom Sir Eva n MacG rego r, of Nehaven.<br />

Pa trick MacGregor , Lord Mac Grego r, eldest son who s. his father,<br />

Duncan (Abberach), was an ardent Royalist. Chief Patrick joined<br />

Montrose in 1644 with 1000 of his own men and was in particular<br />

favor with his illustri ous commander until the end. Montrose<br />

assured him that once Hi s Maj esty's affairs being on a permanent<br />

basis the grievances of the Clan should be effectually redr essed,<br />

etc., but they met with disaster, and Chief Patrick's hopes died<br />

with this great hero, Marquis Montrose (executed Sept. 12, 1650),<br />

and the proscriptions. H owever, in consequence of their loyalt y,<br />

they were thereaft er restored to their name by Charles II by Act<br />

of Parliament. Kin g Charles II , reigned 1660 to 1685, Kin g<br />

Charles I lost his head June 10, 1649. "It is a well established tradition<br />

in the family that Patrick Aberach, son of Duncan, who was<br />

Sir J ohn's great, g reat grandfather, was with Montrose, especially<br />

at the battl e of Kil syth 1645, where he is said to have fought<br />

valiantly, - " Ref. # 10, p. 17, vol. 2, and p. 168, vol. 1. Patrick<br />

m. Marion, dau. of MacD onald of Auch atrichatan, Chief of the<br />

Clan MacD onald of Glenco, by whom he had 3 sons of whom the<br />

eldest,
