This John Murray who secured the famous deed of 1774, 29th Nov.,<br />

has been referred to as-of the House of Lanrick, and of the House<br />

of Glen Carnock, and also of the H ouse of Glen Strae. There<br />

were intermarriages between different Houses at times, but many<br />

of the branches and Houses were descended from brothers of the<br />

same ancestor.<br />

Sir Evan John Murray-MacGregor, 2nd Bt., b. Jan. 1785, was<br />

Maj.-Gen. in Army, KC.B. and G.C.H ., Gov. of the Windward<br />

Islands, assumed by Royal License the additional name of Mac­<br />

Gregor, 22nd Dec. 1822 ; m. 28th May, Elizabeth (d. 12 Apr. 1846) ,<br />

dau. of 4th Duke of Atholl, and had issue, 3 other daus.<br />

Sir Evan was the great grandfa ther of our present hereditary<br />

Chief, Sir Malcolm MacGregor. A picture of Sir Evan in Command<br />

of the escort to the Crown Jewels from Edinburgh to Hooly ­<br />

rood Castle in 1822, in the A.e.G.S. year book for <strong>1954</strong>.<br />

Sir Evan and Elizabeth had :<br />

4. Francis Alexander Robert , E.1.e.S.; b. 1823 ; k. by mutineers<br />

of his Regt., near J abalpur, 25 Sept. 1857.<br />

5. Ea rnest Augustus, Lt. Col. 4th Regt, European Light Cav.,<br />

b. 1825; d. at Calcutta, 17 J an. 1869.<br />

1. Jane Anna Mari a, rn. lstly John James Hamilton Burgoyne,<br />

93rd Highr s.; 2nd son of Sir J. J . Burgoyne, Kt. ;<br />

and 2ndly, M. Le Mount.<br />

Sir Evan d. 14 June 1841 and was s. by his eldest son John, of the<br />

MacGregor chiefs line.<br />

Sir John Atholl Bannatyne MacGr egor, 3rd Bt. ; Lt.-Gov. of the<br />

Virgin Islands, b. 20 Jan. 1810 ; m, 14 Nov. 1833, Mar y Charlotte<br />

(d. 29th Apr . 1896) , yst. dau. and co-heir of Rear-Adm. Sir Thomas<br />

Masterman Hard y, Bt. G.e.B.; "N elson's Hardy" Com'ded his<br />

Flagship the Victory, at Trafalgar, and had issue,<br />

1. Malcolm (Sir), 4th Bt., the present hereditary chief's father.<br />

2. Ath oll, Madras e.S., form erly Briti sh Resident at Travancore,<br />

b. 22 Ju ly 1836 ; rn, 23 Apr . 1878, Coroline Mary Stuart<br />

(d. 10 Dec. 1906) , elder dau. of Sir Robert Menzies, 7th Bt,<br />

of that ilk, and d. 2nd Mar. 1922, leaving issue,
