Gen. XIII Gillespie MacG regor, 3rd son of Gregor ( Aulin) , 12th Chief. b.<br />
in 1375, and became Bard (o r harper) of his Clan, as was common<br />
for younger sons of Hi ghland Chiefs. H e became the founder<br />
of the MacGruder Line. He left thr ee sons, the eldest was W illiam,<br />
who s.<br />
Gen. XIV William MacG ruder, b. 1413, was a witness to a charter dated<br />
Mar . 10, 1447. H e left a son, Gillespie,<br />
Gen. XV Gillespie ( II) MacGr uder, b. in 1453, and left a son, William Mac<br />
Gruder ,<br />
Gen. XVI W illiam ( II) MacG ruder, b. 1490, and left a son, James Mac<br />
Gruder,<br />
Gen. XVII James ( I) MacG ruder, b. in 1519, began his life as a page of<br />
Lord Drumond, so he and his descendants, as were all the Mac<br />
Grego rs, staunch Cavaliers and Royalists, supporters of the Stuarts.<br />
He had a son John,<br />
Gen. XVIII John ( I) MacGruder, b. in 1544, was charged with implicat ion<br />
of a riot by the Clan Gregor on the House of Rochastle in 1580.<br />
He had a son Alexander.<br />
Gen. X IX Alexander (1) MacG ruder, b. 1569, m. May 28, 1605, Lady Margaret<br />
Drum ond, widow of Sir Andre Drumond, Lord of Ballyclose,<br />
and nee, Mar gar et Campbell, dau, of Sir James Campbell, Lord<br />
of Abernchiel. H e was also known as Alexander MacGregor. Th ey<br />
had: 1. James, b. 1607, 2. Alexa nder, b. 1610, and 3. John, b. 1614.<br />
(Gen. XX) The eldest son of Alexander (1 ) MacGruder, was James. He was<br />
not in our direct line which comes down thru his brother , Alexa nder<br />
(II ) ; however, mention will be made of him here. See A.e.G.S.<br />
yb. 1923, page 18, which gives in considerabl e detail information<br />
of these sons of Alexander ( I), Gen. XIX.<br />
James MacGruder, alias James MacGregor, was b. about 1607,<br />
and is mentioned in Act of Scottish Parliament, in Feb. 1649, as<br />
one of the few of Lords , Lairds and Free holders, selected by Parliament<br />
in the name of Charles II , to resist the invading Army of<br />
Cromwell. He is descri bed as "James McGrud er, Laird of Cargill"<br />
and it is believed that he was slain at Worcester in 1649. The<br />
Bar ony of Carg ill was a beauti ful hilly country of the Pershire<br />
Hi ghlands near Dunkeld, on the river Tay and was formerly in<br />
possession of the Drumond Fa mily. The name of MacGregor<br />
being proscri bed at thi s time, it is under standable that James was<br />
mentioned as McGrud er and not his real name-MacGregor. As<br />
James was the Laird of Cargill and referred to as Laird of Mac<br />
Gregor or Chief of the Clan, in the History of Sir Evan Cameron
