John MacGregor b. 944 m. Alpina, dau. of Angus, great gra ndson<br />

of Achaius, broth er of King Kenneth The Great. John was a<br />

contemporary of Malcolm II. Slain in batt le 1004. He left Gregor<br />

(ca lled Garbh for stout) who s. ( MacGrego r chiefs line)<br />

Gregor MacGr egor, born 974, styled Laird of Glenurchy, m. dau.<br />

of Campbell of Lochow, father of Gillespie who m. Eva O'Duin<br />

and became Lai rd of Lochow, ancestor of the Dukes of Argyle.<br />

Gregor fought with David I aga inst the Normans and the Danes<br />

1035-1040. H e was a strong supporter of Duncan I, son of Malcolm<br />

III, Kin g of Scotland 1057-1093, and greatly resented the<br />

murder of Duncan I by MacBeth. They had :<br />

1. Sir J ohn MacGr egor, called "forwa rd into battl e" who s.<br />

( MacGrego r chiefs line)<br />

2. Gregor who became Bishop of St. Andrews.<br />

Sir John MacGregor, the eldest son, became Laird of Glenurchy<br />

( dl 113), in the reign of Alexander I (1107-1124) . H e m. an<br />

English Lady of great beauty, who came to Scotland with Margaret<br />

Aethling, Princess of England and m. Malcolm III. Sir John possessed<br />

Royal powers during that reign. One son (Gregor) became<br />

Bishop of Dunk eld, and Lord Chancellor of Scotland 1157. Hi s<br />

eldest son, Sir Malcolm MacGregor s. ( MacGrego r chiefs line)<br />

Sir Malcolm MacGregor (of th e Castles) , Laird of Mac Gregor,<br />

lived durin g the reign of Kin g David I ( 1124- 1153) and died in 1164,<br />

in the reign of King Ma lcolm IV. H e rn. Marj ory, youngest dau .<br />

of William, Lord Lindsay, the first Lord Crawford, and Chief of<br />

the Army, and nephew of the Kin g David. Malcolm was a man of<br />

great physical strength and courage, and distinguished himself<br />

by saving the life of his King on a great hunt, whereupon the<br />

King Knight ed him on th e spot. T his is the story : In the grea t<br />

forest, the King, on hor seback, had cornered a wild boar , and<br />

was the custom, dismounted to give the death stroke in th e throat<br />

with his spear, but he missed the animal. T he infuri ated beast was<br />

gathering himself to charge the defenseless King, when Malcolm<br />

sprang to the rescue. H e pulled up an Oak sapling by the roots,<br />

and holding it between King David and the boar , asked permi ssion<br />

to kill the animal. Th e Kin g replied, "E'en do, and spare not."<br />

Malcolm then killed the boar with his hunting knife.<br />

King David created Malcolm MacGre gor Lord of Glenurchy, and<br />

added to his ancestral bann er- "an oak tr ee eradicated," and the<br />

motto : "E'en do and Spair nocht", Ori ginally the MacGregor<br />

arm s bore a Pin e tree eradicated in bend sinister proper, but since<br />

the episode recount ed above it has born e an Oak tree instead.<br />

Sir Malcolm and Marjor y left three sons :<br />

1. William MacGre gor , fr om whom ar e descended the Mac ­<br />

Gregor chiefs line, s.<br />

2. Gregor MacGregor, Bishop of Inverness, 1314.<br />

3. Achaius MacGregor, from whom descended the MacKays.<br />
