given, because of some particular interest. In such cases the Roman numerals
indicating generation are enclosed in (gen.-) parenthesis to indicate-not in
ANCESTRY
When first I beqa» my search to see,
What I could learn of my ancestry,
Th ey seemed to me so far away ;
As if they had lived ill Caesar's day,
Bu t my interest grew, and great pains I took,
To find my own ill each hist ory's book,
A s their names ana deeds came to light,
T he ages uanished like mists of the night,
As they came so near I seemed to see,
M y beloved, forgotten ancestry.
Now I have them with me wit h their powd ered hair,
Wearing beruffled shirts debonair.
Their pleated coats and flowered vests,
Th e signet rinqs wit h their jewelled crests,
Th e satin breeches that fit so tight ,
L ong silk stockings and polished shoes,
W ith their buck les of brightened silver, too.
They seemed so near and so dear to me,
M y new [ound friends, my ancestry,
SEGAL.
"NOBLESSE OBLIGE"
It has been said that "Ever). great event ill history turn s upon the action of
an indiuidual and the history of a nation is largely the hist ory of individuals of
which the nation is composed."
Of Family History the same is tru e, that the history of individ uals composing
the family must be taken cognisance of individually, not ollly those belonqlnq to
the present generation, but those who may be discerned through the [aint and
faded light , which illuminates the centuries of past ages.
