Gen. XX Jo hn MacGr egor, alias Murray, eldest son, styled of "Glen Car ­<br />

nock" (Gae lic Glen Carnaig), and Balqhidder , which he acquired,<br />

b. in 1668, d. Sept. 18, 1744. A man of great prudence and sagacity,<br />

who amassed considerab le wealth, etc. T his gentleman is said to<br />

have privately favored the rebellion of 1715; but was cautious of<br />

appearing publicly and did give it essential service. However, he<br />

kept his Clan as a whole out of it, excepting Dugal Ciar's tribe<br />

under the famous Rob Roy. He was 76 when buried (1744) in the<br />

chapel he built in the burial gr ound at Inver Carnoc k, at the head<br />

of Loch Doine Parish, of Balqhidder. He m. Catherine, dau. of<br />

Hu gh Campbell, of Lix. She was 92 at her deat h. A woman of<br />

excellent virtue. Born in 1682 d. 1774. John and Catheri ne had<br />

five sons:<br />

1. Robert MacGregor, eldest son and heir, s. ; he d. in 1758. H e<br />

is not in the direct line, but short sketch is inc.<br />

2. Peter MacGregor, alias Murr ay, m. and left one dau., the<br />

wife of John MacGregor , 2nd Royal Americans.<br />

3. Duncan, wounded at Preston Pans 1745. Not in dir ect line,<br />

but s. his bro., Robt. But he d. Feb. 1787, so succession passed<br />

thru his next bro. Evan to Eva n's son, more later.<br />

4. Evan MacGregor, alia s Murray, b. 1710 but d. 1778 (predeceasing<br />

Duncan) . Chiefship passed to his eldest son, John<br />

(Sir) Murray-MacGregor, s. Duncan. Sir John became th e<br />

Representat ive of Clan, of the MacGregor Line, in the dire ct<br />

hereditar y line of chiefs.<br />

5. Jo hn MacGregor, killed at the battl e of Ticonde rroga 1759.<br />

Ref. 18, p. 1290-Burke says "the 4th son of whom on the death s<br />

of his brothers, s. h i ~" . T hat is to say that the direct line of Sir<br />

Malcolm descended thru the 4th brother, but as he d. in 1778,<br />

pre-deceasing his brother Duncan, actually-Evan (MacGregor)­<br />

Murray's son (John Murray MacGregor) s., and continued th e<br />

representati on of his Family and Clan. Both Miss MacGr egor's<br />

Hi story-Ref. # 10 and the "Baronage"-Ref. #3 agree in the<br />

actual succession as shown in this article, viz. :<br />

Gen. XX J ohn, s. by eldest son, Robert , s. by 3rd son, Duncan ,<br />

s. by the eldest son (J ohn Murray MacGregor) of the 4th bro.<br />

Evan ( MacGrego r) Murray. All ag ree on the direct line of<br />

Sir Malcolm, as coming down from Gen. XX John, thru his 4th<br />

son's son, who was Gen. XX II John Murray MacGregor, later<br />

Sir John and 1st Bt.<br />
