made sheriff and j usticar of Argyle and he was fr ee to use the<br />

Standing Army, if necessar y, to "Keep the Peace". Harrassed<br />

and infuriated by thi s insult and indignation over such injustice<br />

of th e new dynasty, and the intrigues of their political neighbor s,<br />

the MacGregors withdrew into their Hi ghland fastness ; and<br />

adopting a lawless and defiant position, they attempted to hold<br />

their land by the sword, scorning what they called "paper Court".<br />

They acquired a reputation for turbulence and disturbance of the<br />

peace, not only in the Hi ghlands but of the Lowlands of Scotland<br />

on which their land bordered. Th e Clan Gregor, including all its<br />

bra nches was, with the exception of MacD onalds, the largest Clan<br />

in Scotland. Eac h branch (o r House) had a Chieftain, and surnames<br />

began to be used to distin guish them, but they were still<br />

MacGregor s under th e H ereditar y Chief. (Note: Miss Mac­<br />

Gregor in ref. 10, p. 21, vol. I, states that X I Gen., "Malcolm Mac­<br />

Grego r was the latest MacGregor in recognized possession of<br />

Glenurquhay," and quotes entries in the Obituary (unquestionable<br />

authority of (C hronica l of For tingal) to support her. Note also<br />

that Glenurchy, Glenurquhay, and Glen Or chy are one and the<br />

same, alth ough written as indicated by different historians. Lord<br />

Malc olm m. Mary MacA lpin, dau. of Malise MacAlpin, of Fennick<br />

( ref. Nos. 2, 3, 9, and 18) . Malcolm (d I374) and Mary had :<br />

1. Gregor (called Au lin or Auley) s. ( MacG rego r chief s line)<br />

2. Gilbert Gregerson, Lord of Arde and Lag, took th e name<br />

of Grierson. On the 17th of May, 1410, he received a charter<br />

for the lands of Lag in Dum frieshire, from his cousin, H enr y<br />

Sinclai r, 2nd Ea rl of Orkney, etc. (Ref. # 9, vol. 2, p. 234)<br />

takes up the genealogy of 2nd son, Gilbert, and carries the<br />

line down 27 gen. from K ing Alpin, to T homas MacGregor<br />

Greer, living in 1888 in England.<br />

Grego r (Aulin) MacGregor (perfec tly handsome) , s. in 1374 his<br />

father, Malcolm, in th e reign of Robert II (1371-1390) . He was<br />

called the 12th Ch ief ( MacGregor chiefs line) . Ref. # 9 does not<br />

mention the eldest son's line ; however, ref. #2, vol. 7, p. 506, # 3,<br />

vol. 1, p. 496, # 13, vol. 1923, p, 17, and #10 all state that Gregor<br />

(A ulin) s. in 1374 to the Chieftainship of Lord Malcolm, and that he<br />

was the son of Malcolm and Ma ry. T he A.e.G.S. Yea r Book 1923,<br />

p. 17, car ries the line down thr u his 3rd son, Gillespie, to Gen. XX,<br />

Alexa nder (II) MacGregor (McGruder) .<br />

Grego r- Aulin MacGregor m. Iric MacAlp in, dau. of his mother' s<br />

brother, Malcolm. MacA lpin, son of Malti se Mac Alpin. Grego r d.<br />

in 1413 during the reign of James I ( 1405-1435), leaving 5 sons<br />

and several daus. Viz.:<br />

1. Malcolm, eldest son s. but died soon therea fter without issue.<br />

2. John s. upon the death of Malcolm in 1420. J ohn MacGregor,<br />

of that ilk (form erl y of Brackly) , m. a dau. of the Laird of<br />

McLachlan firstly and by her had three sons. Later he m.
