in 1744. Called "GlenCarnock". H e took the name of Murray at<br />

th e request of H is Grace th e (l ate) Duke of Atholl, J ames 3rd,<br />

of whom he held his estate and by whom he was greatly admired.<br />

Robert MacGrgeor Murray was a man of education, of honor, and<br />

pr obity, but invariably attac hed to th e interest of the Stewa rt<br />

famil y. He engaged in their Cause in 1745, had the Command<br />

of his own Clan, the Clan Grego r, to which his brother Evan was<br />

attached as Captain . H is whole fortune was mor tgaged to forwa rd<br />

the effort, which after his death was the means of earring off<br />

his estate. "Prince Charlie" had no stauncher f riend or supporter.<br />

The Duke of Cumberland had Mini ster Gordan entreat P.obert and<br />

his Clan, th e Clan Gregor, to lay down arms and promised in<br />

the name of his H ighn ess to restore their name "MacGregor" and<br />

gra nt other favors. "Glen Carn ock" held a meetinq and SCIlt word<br />

"he and his CIOlI appreciated the honor, but havillg embarked in<br />

this affair the)' could not desert the Calise, whatever they lIlight<br />

suffer. T hat on the aIle hand, though his H ighn ess might love the<br />

treason, he IIlllst needs hate trait ors ; and all the other hand, they<br />

wou ld justly incur the odium of their own part»; that therefore<br />

they chose rather to risk their lives and [ortunes and die with the<br />

characters of honest I1ICIl, than live i ll illfamy, and hand doum<br />

disgrace to their posterity."<br />

A few remar ks by Marshall Magruder rega rdin g the 1745 upris ing<br />

follow :<br />

"A fter the death of Queen A nne in 1715, the first attempt was<br />

made to place a Stewa rt King on the th rone. It result ed in failure,<br />

and Charles whom the English called the "Pretender", went back<br />

to the Contin ent. By 1745 his son, Cha rle s Edward Stewart , whom<br />

the Scots called "Prince Cha rlie", had become of age-was 25<br />

yea rs old. In the 1745 attempt, Charle s Edward arrived fro m<br />

France, but without the powerful supporting for ces prom ised by<br />

the F rench . However, according to promise the thr ee brothers,<br />

Robert, Duncan, and Eva n, met at the appointed place and raised<br />

the Royal Standar d of the "C hevalier" James, at Glen Fi nnan, in<br />

Loch Sh iel. Robert MacGregor, 21st Chief of the Clan Grego r,<br />

was in Command of the Regt. Duncan was a subordinat e Officer,<br />

Evan became Maj or and later A.D.C. on the Staff of " P rince<br />

Charlie". T here were present at the Council of Revolution and<br />

raising of the Standard : T he Marquis T ullibardine, Duke William<br />

of Atholl, Duke of Pe rth, Glen Carnock, Glen Gule, Glen Backs<br />

and Arq ur ior. T he MacGrego rs mar ched to Callender, thence<br />

to Glen Almond where they met "Prince Charl ie" and his par ty,<br />

the MacDonalds and Camerons. T he orig inal journal of the Clan's<br />

opera tions were written by Sir John MacGregor-Murray (eldest<br />

son of Maj or Evan MacGregor ) and kept by Dun can Mac P harrie,<br />

and ar e in the Edenchip paper s.
