Development <strong>of</strong> connection weights<br />

Holistic model<br />

For <strong>the</strong> holistic model training resulted in a diametrically opposed development <strong>of</strong><br />

connection weights <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> two output nodes for <strong>the</strong> two <strong>number</strong>s: connection weights to one<br />

output node were comparatively high for small <strong>number</strong>s and decreased with increasing<br />

magnitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>number</strong> while this pattern was reversed for <strong>the</strong> connection weights to <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r output node. Here, connection weights increased as <strong>the</strong> magnitude <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> to-berepresented<br />

<strong>number</strong> increased. As can be seen from Figure 1 increase / decrease <strong>of</strong> connection<br />

weights with increasing magnitude did not follow a linear function, but ra<strong>the</strong>r seems to be <strong>of</strong><br />

compressed (logarithmic) nature (see below for a discussion).<br />
