GENERAL DISCUSSION<br />

In <strong>the</strong> last section <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>sis a general discussion integrating <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

individual studies shall be given. This discussion will be subdivided into two main<br />

paragraphs. First, in <strong>the</strong> synopsis <strong>the</strong> major results <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> current <strong>the</strong>sis will be evaluated as<br />

regards <strong>the</strong>ir relevance for corroborating <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong> a generalizable <strong>influence</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>place</strong>-<strong>value</strong><br />

properties (as reflected by evidence for decomposed processing <strong>of</strong> tens and units) on different<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> numerical cognition, such as <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mental <strong>number</strong> line and its<br />

development. Subsequently, <strong>the</strong> results concerning individual and cultural differences will be<br />

discussed. Second, <strong>the</strong> specific findings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual studies going beyond <strong>the</strong> scope <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> initial synopsis will be discussed in <strong>the</strong> discussion and evaluation section following <strong>the</strong><br />

general outline <strong>of</strong> this <strong>the</strong>sis differentiating evidence on representational, developmental,<br />

neuropsychological, and computational aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>influence</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>place</strong>-<strong>value</strong> <strong>structure</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>Arabic</strong> <strong>number</strong> system on human numerical cognition. Finally, <strong>the</strong> present <strong>the</strong>sis will be<br />

closed by a conclusions section reiterating <strong>the</strong> most important findings.<br />
