They will also find a personal journal that<br />

describes all of Wyvernthorn's activities since<br />

he arrived in the City of Greyhawk eight<br />

months ago. Highlights in the journal include<br />

his acceptance into the Thieves' Guild, and his<br />

discovery of secret hideout of the Assassins'<br />

Guild.<br />

The Haunt<br />

When the haunt takes form, it appears as a<br />

ghost-like translucent image of Aliar Daraan.<br />

This noteworthy character was a half-elven<br />

assassin working for the Spurned Cult of Iuz.<br />

He stands 6 feet 1 inch tall, and wears elegant<br />

clothing, the finest available on the Flanaess.<br />

Aliar Daraan is a unique haunt, taking form<br />

only after dark. Unlike most other haunts, its<br />

domain is the dagger, Bladestar. The haunts<br />

first priority is to find a host and deliver its<br />

vital message. The presence of the haunt will<br />

interferes with the dagger's normal powers,<br />

and prevent successful use of an identify spell.<br />

The dagger is described in a following section.<br />

Each successful attack by the haunt reduces<br />

the target creature's Dexterity by 2 points.<br />

When the opponent's Dexterity is reduced to<br />

0, the haunt steps into the body and takes it<br />

over. The creature's Dexterity immediately<br />

returns to normal.<br />

When in its natural, noncoporeal state, a<br />

haunt can only be hit by silver or magical<br />

weapons. Any hit with such a weapon inflicts<br />

1 point of damage, plus any magical bonus.<br />

Normal fire causes 1 point of damage per<br />

round of exposure, while magical fire causes<br />

its full damage.<br />

When controlling a host, the haunt can use<br />

physical weapons, but retains its own THACO,<br />

number of attacks, saving throws, etc.<br />

Aftermath<br />

The characters can claim a full victory if<br />

they lay the haunt to rest and also break up<br />

Wyvernthorn's spy gang. They have a partial<br />

success if they only deal with the haunt. In<br />

any case, after settling with the haunt, and<br />

either defeating or escaping Bey Wyvernthorn,<br />

the PCs will most likely still have Bladestar.<br />

The dagger should be considered a reward for<br />

solving the mystery of the Night Watchman's<br />

death.<br />
