mined to strip the temple completely. He has<br />

acquired several slaves, victims of his charm<br />

monster eye. He learned of the temple from<br />

the first party sent. They encountered the beholder,<br />

and he succeeded in charming one of<br />

them, while destroying the rest. The survivor<br />

led him to the temple, died there.<br />

Zomitil's anti-magic eye allowed him to pass<br />

the magical wards protecting the temple, and<br />

he has been looting it for the past few months.<br />

He has managed to charm five ogres in the<br />

ruins, and has put them to work clearing rubble.<br />

Further, he has collected five hook horrors<br />

and three ropers. These are of little use in collecting<br />

treasure, so he has put them to work as<br />

guards. He is systematically looting the temple,<br />

and will use the treasure to further some<br />

nefarious plan of his own.<br />

The Entrance<br />

The temple of St. Cuthbert fell into ruins<br />

over 300 years ago, and Herkluth himself was<br />

buried here over 500 years ago, on a level below<br />

the actual temple. The temple itself is in<br />

ruins, with crumbled walls and the roof fallen<br />

in. The party does not have to search very<br />

hard to find a way in. Much of the debris<br />

seems to be picked over, and some of the larger<br />

rubble has been moved.<br />

Near the back of the ruins is a stairway to<br />

the level below. It is relatively clean. Looking<br />

successfully tracks reveals large, ogre-sized<br />

footprints and an odd three-toed print. The<br />

stairs are both high and narrow; movement<br />

down them must be in single file. Thirty stairs<br />

lead down. At their base is the first line of the<br />

beholder's guards.<br />

1. First Guards<br />

?tyo hook horrors stand guard along each<br />

wall on either side of the stairs. They wait until<br />

at least the first two characters have entered<br />

the room before attacking. They try to<br />

keep the party bottled up on the stairs. They<br />

also let out a loud clicking, which alerts the<br />

last hook horror, skulking in the next room. It<br />

rings a gong, rousing the ogres, the ropers,<br />

and the beholder. Then it joins the melee, entering<br />

at the beginning of the third round.<br />
