HE first edition of this work, which appeared in
parts under the title of Faclair Gaidhlig
le dealbhan, and the nom-de-plume of " Ewen
Mac Donald " being now out of print, the
has arisen for a new edition. The one I now
necessity
present to the public will, I trust, be found of equal
service both to beginners and advanced students of the
language. The first edition of the work has been carefully
revised and no expense or labour spared to make
this the most reliable and complete Gaelic Dictionary
obtainable.
The work was originally undertaken solely for my
own private use, but after continual urging by other
Gaelic students who had seen it,
and proved
its utility
by experience, I at last consented to print
it and so
make the result of my labours accessible to all.
The vocabulary
is based on that of MacLeod & Dewar,
so much appreciated by Gaelic students, and where the
orthography of that work differs from MacBain's Gaelic
Dictionary that of the latter has been generally adopted
here. All the words not given by MacLeod & Dewar,
but appearing in any of the other Gaelic Dictionaries are
now included besides some thousands of words gathered
from Common Speech and the whole range of Modern
Scottish Gaelic Literature, including the Gaelic names
of Plants, Diseases and Birds, Technical Terms, &c., com-
