HE first edition of this work, which appeared in<br />

parts under the title of Faclair Gaidhlig<br />

le dealbhan, and the nom-de-plume of " Ewen<br />

Mac Donald " being now out of print, the<br />

has arisen for a new edition. The one I now<br />

necessity<br />

present to the public will, I trust, be found of equal<br />

service both to beginners and advanced students of the<br />

language. The first edition of the work has been carefully<br />

revised and no expense or labour spared to make<br />

this the most reliable and complete Gaelic Dictionary<br />

obtainable.<br />

The work was originally undertaken solely for my<br />

own private use, but after continual urging by other<br />

Gaelic students who had seen it,<br />

and proved<br />

its utility<br />

by experience, I at last consented to print<br />

it and so<br />

make the result of my labours accessible to all.<br />

The vocabulary<br />

is based on that of MacLeod & Dewar,<br />

so much appreciated by Gaelic students, and where the<br />

orthography of that work differs from MacBain's Gaelic<br />

Dictionary that of the latter has been generally adopted<br />

here. All the words not given by MacLeod & Dewar,<br />

but appearing in any of the other Gaelic Dictionaries are<br />

now included besides some thousands of words gathered<br />

from Common Speech and the whole range of Modern<br />

Scottish Gaelic Literature, including the Gaelic names<br />

of Plants, Diseases and Birds, Technical Terms, &c., com-
