and have lost <strong>the</strong>ir walls ; we are, <strong>the</strong>refore, unable to charactei'ise <strong>the</strong> species with<br />
any <strong>de</strong>gree <strong>of</strong> precision, and it is with much doubt that we refer it to <strong>the</strong> genus<br />
Trochocj'athus, for we are not as yet sufficiently satisfied as to <strong>the</strong> existence <strong>of</strong> pali.<br />
M. Michelin is <strong>of</strong> opinion that <strong>the</strong>se <strong>fossil</strong>s are merely specimens <strong>of</strong> Trochoci/athus comdus<br />
with <strong>the</strong>ir basis worn away. They are <strong>of</strong> a couico-convex form, and are broa<strong>de</strong>r in<br />
proportion than T. Hancyanus, to which <strong>the</strong>y bear, however, great resemblance. Their<br />
height is about four lines, and <strong>the</strong>ir diameter a little more. We have not consi<strong>de</strong>red<br />
it<br />
necessary to give a new figure <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se <strong>corals</strong>, for <strong>the</strong> specimens in OW' possession do not<br />
show anything more than those represented in Dr. Mantell's plates.<br />
The specimens that we ha\'e had an opportunity <strong>of</strong> examining were found in <strong>the</strong> Gault at<br />
Folkstone, in <strong>the</strong> environs <strong>of</strong> Boulogne-sur-]\Iei', at Wissant, at Lcs Fiz, near Charaounix,<br />
and at <strong>the</strong> Perte du Rhone, in <strong>the</strong> <strong>de</strong>partment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ain. According to Dr. Mantell <strong>the</strong><br />
same species is met Avith at Lewes in Sussex, and Godstone in Sm'rey, at Mailing in<br />
Kent, in Cambridgeshii'e,^ at Ringmer, and at Bletchiugley."<br />
Trochocyathus (?)<br />

We are inclined to think that a cast found in <strong>the</strong> Gault <strong>of</strong> Cambrido;eshirc bv<br />
Mr. H. Warburton, and presented by that gentleman to <strong>the</strong> Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Geological<br />
Society, must belong to a distinct species <strong>of</strong> Trochocyathus. It is about six lines in<br />
height, and seven in diameter ; <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> septa is forty-eight. For <strong>the</strong> sake <strong>of</strong><br />
convenience we have given a specific name to it,<br />
but we are not able to characterise it.<br />

Corallum simple, adherent by a broad basis, straight, tall, compressed, and having its<br />
lateral edges somewhat prominent. Wall <strong>de</strong>licately granulated. Costce not very distinct<br />
in <strong>the</strong> lower half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> corallum, but becoming ra<strong>the</strong>r prominent higher up, especially<br />
those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first and second or<strong>de</strong>rs. Calice elliptical and horizontal, <strong>the</strong> relative length<br />
170, and in ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
= 100:250). Fossida narrow, and appearing to be <strong>de</strong>ep, but completely filled up with<br />
<strong>of</strong> its long and short axis varying much (in one specimens 100 :<br />
extraneous matter in all <strong>the</strong> specimens that we have seen, so as not to enable us to obtain<br />
any knowledge respecting <strong>the</strong> columella and <strong>the</strong> pali. It is <strong>the</strong>refore with some uncertainty<br />
that we refer this species to <strong>the</strong> genus Bathycyathus, and in doing so we have been gui<strong>de</strong>d<br />
