54. Genus Hydnophoea.<br />

Corallum formed <strong>of</strong> irregular series <strong>of</strong> corallites, united by <strong>the</strong>ir walls, which are thick,<br />

compact, and constitute ridges, divi<strong>de</strong>d longitudinally, so as to represent rows <strong>of</strong> conical<br />

prominences, or monticulse. The cahcular trenches are transversal as well as longitudinal,<br />

and <strong>the</strong>re is no columella. Septa nearly equal, and rising to <strong>the</strong> apex <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conical mural<br />

monticulse. General form sometimes massive and sub-globose or gibbous ; sometimes<br />

sub-explanate.<br />

Section III.—ASTREIN^ DENDROIDiE.<br />

Corallum always increasing by lateral gemmation. The corallites segregate, and having<br />

an arborescent or fasciculate aiTangement. Septa regularly and <strong>de</strong>licately serrated ; those<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal cycla always bearing pali.<br />

55. Genus Cladocoka.<br />

Corallum arborescent, forming branched clumps.<br />

Corallites cylindrical, very long, and<br />

completely free laterally. Calices cii'cular, or almost so. Columella papillose. Pali well<br />

<strong>de</strong>veloped, and corresponding to all <strong>the</strong> septa, except those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> last cyclum. Sejjfa<br />

slightly exsert, nearly equal, granulated, and having <strong>the</strong>ir apex arched and <strong>de</strong>hcately serrated.<br />

Walls compact, with simple, granulated, or echinulated costse, and an incomplete epi<strong>the</strong>ca,<br />

which <strong>of</strong>ten expands into cu'cular, horizontal leaves, extending to <strong>the</strong> neighboiu-ing<br />

coralhtes.<br />

Corallum sub-<strong>de</strong>ndi'oid. Corallites cylindrical, very short ; united by <strong>the</strong>u' basal part,<br />

and free towards <strong>the</strong>ir upper end. Columella, pali, and septa much as in <strong>the</strong> preceding<br />

genus. Walls compact, extremely thick, and never presenting any traces <strong>of</strong> an epi<strong>the</strong>ca.<br />
