Polypi aggregate, and having a common peduncle, <strong>the</strong> centre <strong>of</strong> which is occupied<br />
by a peculiar cavity, and usually contains a solid axis ; this sclerobasis styliform, and never<br />
expanding at its un<strong>de</strong>r extremity, so as to adhere to extraneous bodies. The polypi mass<br />
is consequently free.<br />

Polype mass plinne-shaped, with <strong>the</strong> shaft composed <strong>of</strong> contractile common tissue,<br />
containing<br />
a short subosseous axis, and bearing on each si<strong>de</strong> <strong>of</strong> its upper part a series <strong>of</strong><br />
large spreading pinnules, on <strong>the</strong> upper edge <strong>of</strong> which, <strong>the</strong> retractile exhalic portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
polypi protu<strong>de</strong>s. The axis is cylindrical at its upper part, and more or less quadrangular<br />
towards its lower end ; its structure is somewhat iibrous, and its tissue is not very brittle.<br />
