MADREPORID^.<br />

Corallum composite, increasing by gemmation and not by fissiparity. Ccenenckpna<br />

abundant, spongy, and reticulate. TTalls very porous, and not distinct from <strong>the</strong> coenenchyma.<br />

Septa laraellose, and well <strong>de</strong>veloped ; loculi free.<br />

First Tribe—MADREPORINtE.<br />

Visceral chambers divi<strong>de</strong>d into two equal parts by two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> principal septa, which<br />

are more <strong>de</strong>veloped than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, and meet by <strong>the</strong>ir inner edge.<br />

1. Genus Madrepora.<br />

Corallum composite, forming ramified, lobate, or fasciculate masses. Coenenchyma<br />

loose, and <strong>de</strong>licately echinulate. Calices projecting, with a thick margin. No columella.<br />
