A fe\-l more towns are also experiencing very
high annual growth rates ranging from 5 per cent
to around 9 per cent during 1971-81. They are:
Dharan, Rajbiraj, Hetauda, Janakpur, Butwal,
Bhairahawa and Tansen.
One thing which is common
with all these towns except Tansen is that they
belong to plain (Terat) region of the country where
transportation network is better developed. Dharan,
Hetauda and Janakpur have developed as industrial
towns and have sound commercial base.
Siddharthanagar
and Butwal which are located at the confluence
of road routes have emerged and developed
into new commercial localities after the completion
of Siddhartha highway in 1968.
A study
rela ted to the Central Region (Siddharthanagar
and Butwal fall in this region) showed that a
relatively large proportion of present urban
centres developed as business centre only after
1968 when Siddhartha highway was completed(Blaikie
et.al., 1980).
Urban population has increased quite

rapidly in Tansen in the last decade mainly because
of expansion of municipal boundaries.
