225 8.6 Selection of Socio-Economic Development Indicators: Development 1s a multi-dimentional phenomenon. Its definition varies widely among social scientists, economists, geographers, sociologists, etc. However, in the present study our major concern is to obtain the levels of socio-economic development of districts. In order to arrive at this objective 23 indicators have been considered which are mainly based on the availability of comparable data. The main sectors from where these indicators have been drawn concern with agriculture, industry, health, education, transport and comnunication, power and banking. By selecting 23 indicators of development from different sectors of the economy we are introducing diversity in content to suit the broad canvass that -development- encompasses. By diversity in content we mean that the indicators selected reflect the various dimensions of development. By doing so we would expect more accurate and representative levels of development of districts. The list of indicators selected to obtain--the index of socio-economic development are as followsl
