(ii) Mining, (iii) Manufacturing, (iv) Electricity,
(v) Construction, (vi) Commerce and trade,
(vii) Transport, (viii) Finance and business,
and (ix) Personal and community services.
The nine categories are regrouped into four
major groups by combining (i) and (ii) and designating
it as agricultural town (A), (iii) and" (v) as
manufacturing towns (M), (vi) and (viii) as trade
and commerce towns (C) and (iv), (vii) and (~)
as service towns (s). This regrouping is done in
view of the very insignificant proportion of male
labour force employed in some activities. While
classifying these towns 1971 is treated as the
base. In 1971 there were only 16 towns. Thus only
16 towns which are found to be common between 1971
to 1981 have been consi~ed for the purpose of
this analysis.
7.6.1 Methods of Classificationl
In order to functionally classify the towns
a method developed by Wilkinson (1964) has been
followed.
The method is outlined briefly below.
