IB English A Literature H1 and H2 Grade 11, 12<br />
Pre-requisites for H1: Two full credits of English 1 and 2 or equivalent; teacher recommendation.<br />
2 years, 1 credit per year<br />
This is a two-year course designed for students who desire further enrichment in the study<br />
of literature. The focus is towards developing an understanding of the techniques involved<br />
in literary criticism and promoting the ability to form independent literary judgments while<br />
also developing student understanding of literature as a record of the human experience. It<br />
deals with a comprehensive and close study of a select group of representative works<br />
examined in four major areas designated by the IB:<br />
1. Works in translation – 3 works<br />
2. Detailed Study – 3 works<br />
3. Literary genres – 4 works<br />
4. Options – 3 works<br />
Requirements of the course are substantial, requiring at least three (3) more primary texts<br />
than SL and an expectation that secondary texts will also be read to augment understanding<br />
of primary texts. Minimum requirements for IB purposes require:<br />
Paper 1: unseen commentary writing<br />
Paper 2: a compare and contrast essay based on two works from the same genre<br />
studied in part 3<br />
A written assignment on a work in translation<br />
An individual oral commentary based on a work from detailed study part 2<br />
An interview on a second work from part 2<br />
Students interested in sitting AP Language and Literature exams should consider taking this<br />
course as studying IB English A Literature enables students to complete the AP Language<br />
and Literature exam.<br />
IB English A Language and Literature S1 and S2 Grade 11, 12<br />
Pre-requisite for S1: Two full credits of English 1 and 2 or equivalent<br />
High achieving students with an ESL background in Grade 9 and one full year of English 1 in Grade 10<br />
and the strong support of teacher recommendation may apply to the Program Leader.<br />
2 years, 1 credit per year<br />
This is a two-year course for students interested in understanding the constructed nature of<br />
meanings generated by the English language and the web of relationships English shares<br />
with the social world. While literary texts are used as a basis for assessments, discourse,<br />
and written work, half the course is structured around a range of non-literary texts making<br />
this course more suitable for students less interested in literary study and more interested<br />
the study of language as we encounter it in day-to-day living. The topics of study for this<br />
course are:<br />
1. Language in a cultural context – various non-literary topics<br />
2. Language and mass communication – with a focus on advertising and news media.<br />
