Assessment is carried out through a variety of tasks including homework, quizzes, writing<br />
exercises, long tests, oral presentations, interviews, role plays and semester examinations.<br />
For Chinese: Upon completion of the course, students will be expected to write 250-<br />
300 characters and recognize 350-550 characters.<br />
For Japanese: Students will ideally learn up to 200 Kanji characters.<br />
Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish - Level 3 Grade 9, 10, 11, 12<br />
Pre-requisite: Level 2 High <strong>School</strong> or Level C Middle <strong>School</strong> and teacher recommendation<br />
1 year, 1 credit<br />
The Level 3 courses prepare students for the IB Language B courses and are generally<br />
organized around the three IB Core Topics; Communication and Media, Global Issues and<br />
Social Relationships. A variety of oral and written texts are used to enhance the<br />
development of the four skills of language, using beginning intermediate language items,<br />
through a thematic and communicative approach. Students will also become familiar with<br />
the important features of the target countries.<br />
Equal weight is given to written and oral skills.<br />
Assessment is also carried out through a variety of tasks including homework, quizzes, essay<br />
writing, oral presentations, interviews, and semester examinations.<br />
For Chinese: Students are expected to use the language orally and by the end of the<br />
course will be expected to write 350-500 characters and recognize 350-600 characters.<br />
For Japanese: Up to 400 Kanji characters will be taught at this level.<br />
Chinese, French, Japanese, Spanish - Level 4 Grade 10<br />
Pre-requisite: Level 3<br />
1 year, 1 credit<br />
These Level 4 courses are designed as a preparation for IB Higher Level language courses.<br />
They focus on a wide range of written and oral texts relating to the three IB Core Topics;<br />
Communication and Media, Global Issues and Social Relationships. The courses will provide<br />
students with a variety of activities that will allow them to develop the four language skills<br />
enabling them to communicate with ease and efficiency in the language.<br />
Assessment is carried out through a variety of tasks including homework, quizzes, essay<br />
writing, oral presentations, interviews, role plays and semester examinations.<br />
For Chinese: Students are expected to master 500 characters.<br />
For Japanese: Up to 600 Kanji characters will be taught at this level.<br />
