IB Business and Management S1 and S2 Grade 11, 12<br />

Pre-requisite for S1: Teacher recommendation<br />

2 years, 1 credit per year<br />

Business and Management is the critical study of the ways in which individuals and groups<br />

interact in a dynamic business environment. It examines how business decisions are made<br />

and how these decisions make an impact on internal and external environments. The course<br />

is designed to give students an understanding of business principles, practices and skills.<br />

Emphasis is also placed on understanding technical innovation and the day-to-day business<br />

functions of marketing, human resource management and finance.<br />

The second year of this course is designed to continue student investigation of the business<br />

world in the areas of marketing, human resource management, as well as, accounting and<br />

finance. This last module includes the study of funding, debt and equity, investment<br />

appraisal, budgets and cash flow forecasts. Emphasis is placed on problem solving through<br />

the use of data and appropriate analytical tools. Students are asked to apply theory to reallife<br />

situations.<br />

There is an internal assessment/guided coursework component that may be completed in<br />

either the first or the second year of the course at the teacher’s prerogative. All students<br />

will be expected to take the IB examination.<br />

IB Business and Management H1 and H2 Grade 11, 12<br />

Pre-requisite for H1: Teacher recommendation<br />

2 years, 1 credit per year<br />

Higher Level candidates will complete similar modules to those undertaken at Standard<br />

Level to understand business principles, practices and skills. However, students will need to<br />

illustrate a more detailed understanding of the topics covered in this advanced course. In<br />

Year 1, students will study a module entitled, “Business Organization and Environment,”<br />

which focuses on types of ownership, organizational objectives, business plans and<br />

globalization. Students will also study two other modules entitled, “Human Resources and<br />

Accounts and Finance.”<br />

The second year of this course is designed to prepare students for the IB external<br />

examination. Topics covered include Marketing, Operations Management and Business<br />

Strategy. There is an internal assessment/guided coursework component that may be<br />

completed in either the first or second year of the course at the teacher’s prerogative. All<br />

students will be expected to take the IB examination in the second year of the course.<br />
