A student may study a second foreign language as an elective course with the Principal’s<br />

permission.<br />

Filipino Program<br />

Introduction to Filipino Literature 1 and 2 focuses on developing Filipino speakers’ language<br />

proficiency, particularly in written skills as preparation for IB Filipino Language A<br />

Literature. The students will gain experience handling both language and literature aspects<br />

of texts. This course is recommended for Grade 9 and Grade 10 Filipino speakers who are<br />

planning to study IB Filipino and stay in the Philippines for university.<br />

Literature Program (Filipino, Japanese and Korean)<br />

This course is recommended for first language speakers who are planning to undertake<br />

study in their home countries.<br />

IB Language B and Course Selection<br />

The level of competence already achieved in a particular language is a key factor in the<br />

appropriate placement of a student in IB Language B courses. The <strong>International</strong><br />

Baccalaureate Organization has specific guidelines for students selecting IB Language B<br />

courses. ISM is required to follow these guidelines. Below is a rubric printed by IBO that will<br />

help students select an appropriate IB Language B.<br />

Ab Initio SL<br />

Language B SL<br />

Language B HL<br />

is for a language beginner who:<br />

• has no previous experience of the language.<br />

• has not studied any other language up to or beyond Level 2.<br />

is for a language learner who may not intend to continue the study of a<br />

language beyond the Diploma program, and who:<br />

• has two to five years experience of the target language.<br />

• has passed Level 2 or beyond in that language.<br />

• the language is not a “mother tongue”.<br />

is for a language learner who intends to study the language at this level<br />

for a future career or to meet a Diploma requirement, and who:<br />

• has four to five years’ experience of the target language.<br />

• has passed Level 3 or beyond.<br />

• in cases where students have this language as a “mother tongue” but<br />

have had no formal education in the language. Placement of students<br />

in this category is at the discretion of the IB Coordinator with advice<br />

from the teacher specializing in that language.<br />

Level 4 classes are for Grade 10 students who have already completed a Level 3 course and<br />

usually are going to study the language at IB Higher Level.<br />
