2 cr. hrs. Methods, materials and techniques for<br />
teaching instrumental music in the public school.<br />

462. Choral/Vocal Techniques. 2 cr. hrs. A study<br />
<strong>of</strong> comparative vocal pedagogy including concepts<br />
<strong>of</strong> vibrato, registers, dynamics, range, breathing,<br />
support, tone, placement, resonance, and voice classification.<br />
Practical application through observation<br />

Choral conducting techniques including experience<br />

Church Music<br />
344. Christian Hymnody: A Window into the<br />
Bible, Christian History and Theology. 4 cr. hrs.<br />
Using a study <strong>of</strong> the Psalms and selected Old<br />
Testament and New Testament Canticles, the hymns<br />
<strong>of</strong> the early and medieval church, the hymns <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Lutheran Reformation, the psalmody <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Genevan, Scottish and English Reformation movements<br />
and the development <strong>of</strong> English and<br />
American hymnody, the course explores the importance<br />
<strong>of</strong> congregational song in biblical understanding,<br />
Christian history, and Christian theology and<br />
worship. A background in music is not necessary.<br />

Performance Labs/Ensembles<br />
A wide variety <strong>of</strong> performance labs/ensembles is available<br />
to qualified students. Performance laboratories<br />
(ensembles) are for most students an extension <strong>of</strong><br />
applied study and/or choral and instrumental techniques<br />
classes. Non-music majors may use up to eight<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> lab/ensemble credit as elective hours toward<br />
graduation. The same course number is used when<br />
repeating the course. Auditions are usually required.<br />
Not all ensembles may be <strong>of</strong>fered each semester.<br />

380. Chapel Choir. Membership in the Chapel<br />
Choir is open to the student body. Membership<br />
auditions are held each semester. The choir sings for<br />
college worship services, presents concerts in area<br />
churches, and makes an annual tour. The tour choir<br />
consists <strong>of</strong> approximately 80 voices and is selected<br />
from the membership <strong>of</strong> the Chapel Choir.<br />
Applicable to vocal lab/ensemble requirements for<br />
music majors.<br />
381. Concert Choir. An organization <strong>of</strong> limited<br />
membership selected for tone production and musicianship<br />
surveying great choral literature. This<br />
organization represents the college in public engagements,<br />
makes annual tours and periodic international<br />
tours. Its repertoire includes sacred and secular<br />
works. Members are selected by audition from<br />
the sophomore, junior, and senior classes. Those<br />
auditioning should plan to remain in the group for<br />
the entire school year. Applicable to vocal<br />
lab/ensemble requirements for music majors.<br />
382. Symphonic Band. Open to all students by<br />
audition, this 60 piece band meets three times<br />
weekly. Primarily a concert organization, the band<br />
does not march. The group presents area concerts<br />
and tours regularly. Applicable to instrumental<br />
lab/ensemble requirements for music majors.<br />
383. Jazz Band. The Jazz Band <strong>of</strong>fers a creative<br />
outlet for the instrumental musician through performance<br />
<strong>of</strong> a variety <strong>of</strong> jazz literature. The Jazz<br />
Band performs concerts on campus and in the<br />
100
