Physical Education and Recreation<br />

155. Foundations <strong>of</strong> Physical Education,<br />

Recreation, & Sport. 2 cr. hrs. An introductory<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional course which covers the scope, purpose,<br />

history, growth and development, and career<br />

assessment <strong>of</strong> physical education and recreation.<br />

216. Aerobic Conditioning & Strength Training.<br />

2 cr. hrs. This course is designed to instruct students<br />

in different methods <strong>of</strong> cardio-respiratory<br />

training and muscular resistance training.<br />

225. Officiating Game & Sport. 2 cr. hrs. This<br />

course is designed to teach students how to <strong>of</strong>ficiate<br />

games and sports including football, basketball,<br />

baseball and s<strong>of</strong>tball.<br />

228. Lifetime Individual Activities & Dance.<br />

3 cr. hrs. An introduction to basic skills and<br />

teaching techniques in individual sports (tennis,<br />

badminton, golf and racquetball) and dance.<br />

229. Lifetime Team Activities. 2 cr. hrs. An<br />

introduction to basic skills and teaching techniques<br />

in team sports including volleyball, soccer,<br />

basketball, s<strong>of</strong>tball, baseball and football.<br />

249. Anatomy and Physiology. 2 cr. hrs. A generalized<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the structure and function <strong>of</strong><br />

cells, tissues, metabolism, the skeletomuscular<br />

system, respiration, and cardiovascular system as<br />

they relate to physical education.<br />

250. Health Science. 2 cr. hrs. A study <strong>of</strong> personal<br />

and community health which challenges students<br />

to consider health information from physical,<br />

emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual<br />

dimensions and helps them master the important<br />

developmental tasks which confront them.<br />

256. Social Aspects <strong>of</strong> Physical Education &<br />

Recreation. 2 cr. hrs. Analysis <strong>of</strong> social aspects<br />

that influence human performance in sport and<br />

exercise. Prerequisite: PED 155.<br />

261. Prevention and Treatment <strong>of</strong> Athletic<br />

Injury. 2 cr. hrs. A basic course in the management<br />

<strong>of</strong> common athletic injuries and conditions.<br />

Includes study <strong>of</strong> causes <strong>of</strong> such problems and<br />

how to help prevent their occurrence. First Aid,<br />

CPR, and AED techniques are included.<br />

Prerequisite: PED 249.<br />

280. Psychological Aspects <strong>of</strong> Physical<br />

Education & Recreation. 2 cr. hrs. Analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

the psychological concepts that influence human<br />

performance in sport and exercise. Prerequisite:<br />

PED 155.<br />

290. Field Experience in Recreation/Sport.<br />

2 cr. hrs. Provides practical experience at selected<br />

recreation agencies. Students will be supervised<br />

by department staff and agency director(s).<br />

Requires approval <strong>of</strong> department chair.<br />

Prerequisites: PED 155, 261.<br />

300. Physiology <strong>of</strong> Exercise. 3 cr. hrs. A study<br />

<strong>of</strong> the immediate and long-range effects <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

activity on the muscular, respiratory, circulatory,<br />

nervous, and metabolic systems. Laboratories are<br />

included. Prerequisite: PED 249. Recommended:<br />

PED 392.<br />

339. Analysis <strong>of</strong> Coaching Swimming and<br />

Diving. 2 cr. hrs. American National Red Cross<br />

Water Safety Instructor Course. Certification requires<br />

meeting all current Red Cross standards. Course<br />

credit is independent <strong>of</strong> Red Cross certification.<br />

375. Perceptual Motor Development. 2 cr. hrs.<br />

A study <strong>of</strong> changes in motor behavior over the lifespan,<br />

the processes underlying these changes, and<br />

the factors affecting them. Prerequisite: PED 249.<br />

381. Assessment & Evaluation <strong>of</strong> Physical<br />

Education 2 cr. hrs. A study <strong>of</strong> the assessment<br />

and evaluation procedures in physical education,<br />

recreation, and sport science, the administration<br />

<strong>of</strong> such procedures, and the interpretation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

results via fundamental statistical methods.<br />

Prerequisite: junior standing. Recommended:<br />

PED 228, PED 229.<br />

390. Facilities and Equipment in Recreation<br />

and Sport. 2 cr. hrs. Planning principles and<br />

guidelines for the design, construction, and equipping<br />

<strong>of</strong> educational, recreational, and sport facilities.<br />

Prerequisite: PED 155.<br />

392. Kinesiology. 2 cr. hrs.The study <strong>of</strong> the principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> human movement, structural, and<br />

mechanical. Prerequisite: PED 249.<br />

394. Analysis <strong>of</strong> Coaching Cheerleaders and<br />

Dance Teams. 2 cr. hrs. Fundamentals and techniques<br />

<strong>of</strong> teaching the gymnastic and rhythmic activities<br />

associated with cheerleading and dance teams.<br />
