Students pursuing the B.A. degree must complete<br />

one semester <strong>of</strong> foreign language at the intermediate<br />

level or higher. Please see the general education section<br />

<strong>of</strong> this catalog for detailed information about<br />

transferring college credit to fulfill the <strong>William</strong><br />

<strong>Jewell</strong> language requirement.<br />

Entering students may receive up to 8 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

credits in French or Spanish at the elementary<br />

level by submitting a satisfactory score on the<br />

CLEP examination, or in Greek, Latin or Japanese<br />

on the basis <strong>of</strong> a locally administered examination.<br />

All students with two or more years <strong>of</strong> the same foreign<br />

language in high school must take a placement<br />

test to determine the course they must enroll in.<br />

Students whose placement tests do not qualify them<br />

to enroll in an intermediate course may enroll in a<br />

course at a lower level as the placement score indicates.<br />

Students with two years or more <strong>of</strong> Spanish<br />

or Latin in high school may not enroll in the beginning<br />

courses <strong>of</strong> that language (111-112) but instead<br />

in the accelerated elementary course (SPA or LAT<br />

114). Please see the general education section <strong>of</strong> this<br />

catalog for detailed information about transferring<br />

college credit in foreign language courses.<br />

Major in French or Spanish<br />

French majors must complete 24 hours <strong>of</strong> French<br />

courses numbered 300 or above, including FRE<br />

415. It is required that students choosing French as<br />

a first major complete at least 6 hours <strong>of</strong> French<br />

study in a French-speaking region. It is highly recommended<br />

that students choosing French as a second<br />

or third major complete at least 6 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

French study in a French-speaking region.<br />

Spanish majors must complete 24 hours <strong>of</strong><br />

Spanish courses numbered 300 or above,<br />

including Spanish 415. It is required that at<br />

least 8 hours <strong>of</strong> 300-level study be completed in<br />

a Spanish-speaking country.<br />

Students completing a second major in French<br />

or Spanish must complete the requirements for<br />

the Bachelor <strong>of</strong> Arts degree.<br />

A grade <strong>of</strong> C- or higher is required in each course in<br />

the major.<br />

Students may receive certification to teach French or<br />

Spanish in grades K-12 in the State <strong>of</strong> Missouri by<br />

double majoring in either French or Spanish and<br />

secondary education. Procedures to be followed in<br />

obtaining teacher certification are included in the<br />

Student Handbook for Teacher Certification.<br />

Specific course requirements for all certification programs<br />

may be found on check sheets available in<br />

the education department <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Major in International Business<br />

and Language<br />

The International Business and Language (IBL)<br />

Major is a specially designed program planned for<br />

students who are strongly interested in foreign languages<br />

and who plan a career in international business.<br />

It is not the same as two majors, one in<br />

Business, the other in French or Spanish, but it<br />

includes features <strong>of</strong> both majors. It includes substantial<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the language, culture and literature<br />

<strong>of</strong> France or Spain and Latin America, including the<br />

opportunity for study abroad; a solid core <strong>of</strong> business,<br />

economics and accounting courses, including<br />

opportunities for internships in international businesses;<br />

and courses in western civilization and political<br />

science.<br />

A grade <strong>of</strong> C- or higher is required in each course in<br />

the major.<br />

Students may choose a language other than French<br />

or Spanish for their IBL major. Such a student must<br />

complete a proposal for a self-designed major that<br />

meets the language and target language area requirements<br />

<strong>of</strong> that major. This proposal must be<br />

approved by the Chair <strong>of</strong> the Languages<br />

Department and the Academic Dean.<br />

International Business and French<br />

Required courses:<br />

Sixteen hours <strong>of</strong> courses in French numbered<br />

300 or above, including at least 8 hours <strong>of</strong> literature<br />

and 4 hours <strong>of</strong> civilization courses. Students must<br />

include FRE 323 and a semester in Dijon, France, in<br />

the 16 hours. Fifteen hours <strong>of</strong> business courses,
