experience. Toward that end, a leadership certificate<br />

pilot program was established in the fall <strong>of</strong> 1993 by<br />

the college in conjunction with the Pryor<br />

Foundation, headed by Fred and Shirley Pryor. In<br />

January 1998, the Pryor Leadership Studies<br />

Program was permanently endowed by the Pryors.<br />

Students are chosen each spring semester through a<br />

competitive application/interview process. In order<br />

to graduate as Pryor Leadership Fellows and receive<br />

the corresponding leadership certificate, students<br />

must complete all required activities. The certificate<br />

requires completion <strong>of</strong>:<br />

250. Cornerstone Course. 2 cr. hrs. This course<br />

will introduce students to leadership theory, engage<br />

them in a variety <strong>of</strong> self-understanding and assessment<br />

exercises, provide them individual and collective<br />

leadership experiences, and assist them in<br />

preparing and executing their first leadership<br />

growth plans. Fall semester.<br />

251. Service-Leadership Experience (Outward<br />

Bound Trip). 2 cr. hrs. This <strong>of</strong>f-campus experiential<br />

learning experience will allow students to put into<br />

practice leadership skills and ideas learned during<br />

the introductory seminar. The trip will include a<br />

service component. Students are responsible for the<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> the trip (set by the Outward Bound School)<br />

and the cost <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jewell</strong> tuition. (Scheduled<br />

during the semester break.)<br />

300. Volunteer Internship. 1 cr. hr. This internship<br />

is a non-paid experience fostering civic volunteerism<br />

and civic leadership. Its purpose is to link theory<br />

and practice, providing students the opportunity to<br />

observe in a volunteer setting the leadership/followership<br />

concepts studied in the pro-gram. Each student<br />

will work under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a leadership<br />

mentor and will devote a minimum <strong>of</strong> seventy<br />

hours to the internship. Forum obligations and<br />

meetings with instructors will be included in the<br />

seventy hours. (Must be successfully completed<br />

before taking the Capstone Course.)<br />

301. Vocational Internship. 1 cr. hr. This internship<br />

provides an opportunity for students to explore<br />

and experience first-hand their own career interests.<br />

Its purpose is to link theory and practice, providing<br />

students the opportunity to observe in a vocational<br />

setting the leadership/followership concepts studied<br />

in the program. Each student will work under the<br />

<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> –<br />

Leadership Studies Program<br />

supervision <strong>of</strong> a leadership mentor and will devote a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> seventy hours to the internship. Forum<br />

obligations and meetings with instructors will be<br />

included in the seventy hours. The internships<br />

must have a reasonable relationship to students’<br />

majors. Students may accept pay for this<br />

internship. (Must be successfully completed before<br />

taking the Capstone Course).<br />

350. Capstone Course. 2 cr. hrs. The course will<br />

re-examine leadership theory and assist students in<br />

creating a plan for continued personal and leadership<br />

growth. Students design and implement a<br />

“Leadership Legacy” project. (Spring semester <strong>of</strong><br />

junior year or spring semester <strong>of</strong> senior year if the<br />

student enters as a sophomore and elects to study<br />

overseas during the junior year.)<br />

Lecture Series 0 cr. hrs. Each semester, the Pryor<br />

Leadership Fellows participate in the “Perspectives<br />

on the Common Good” Lecture Series. Fellows are<br />

required to attend a minimum <strong>of</strong> eight lectures in<br />

order to qualify for the Pryor Leadership certificate.<br />

Leadership Portfolio. A leadership portfolio is<br />

maintained on each Pryor Fellow. In order to<br />

received the Pryor Leadership Certificate, the portfolio<br />

must be reviewed and approved by an evaluation<br />

committee comprised <strong>of</strong> the leadership studies<br />

director, faculty members, and representatives designated<br />

by the Pryor Foundation. At the request <strong>of</strong><br />

the Pryor Foundation, this review process may also<br />

include exit interviews with students. The portfolio<br />

will include the following:<br />

1. Leadership Growth Plans.<br />

2. Outward Bound Journal<br />

and Summary Document<br />

3. Internship Journals and Internship Exit Essays<br />

4. Mentors’ Evaluations<br />

5. Eight “Top Ten” Papers (lecture series)<br />

Other items deemed appropriate by the director.<br />

Tucker Leadership Lab<br />

As a complement to the Pryor Leadership Studies<br />

Program (PLSP) the Tucker Leadership Lab (TLL)<br />

allows <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jewell</strong> <strong>College</strong> to <strong>of</strong>fer high quality<br />

leadership and team building programs to <strong>William</strong><br />

<strong>Jewell</strong> students, to area high school students, and to<br />
