Oxbridge Pr<strong>of</strong>essor D. Dean Dunham, Senior Tutor<br />

Oxbridge tutorial majors are <strong>of</strong>fered in English<br />

Language and Literature, History, History <strong>of</strong> Ideas<br />

(an interdisciplinary great books major), Institutions<br />

and Policy (an interdisciplinary major involving philosophy,<br />

politics, and economics), Music, and<br />

Science (molecular biology). All Oxbridge majors<br />

are part <strong>of</strong> the B.A. program.<br />

The small group <strong>of</strong> outstanding students admitted to<br />

the program prepare for senior comprehensive<br />

examinations in the major fields by study in individual<br />

or small-group tutorials and by independent<br />

reading and research. They normally spend the junior<br />

year in one <strong>of</strong> <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jewell</strong>’s programs in either<br />

Oxford or Cambridge. First year students enter as<br />

Oxbridge Open students and do not apply for entry<br />

into majors until late in spring semester.<br />

Members <strong>of</strong> many departments <strong>of</strong> the college serve<br />

as tutors. Oxbridge courses and tutorials are open<br />

only to students formally admitted to the program.<br />

OXA 100. Introductory Seminar. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

Tutor: Kenneth Chatlos, Oxbridge Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> History<br />

An introduction to the research methods, analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> primary and secondary sources, and writing<br />

skills which will be used in tutorials. The particular<br />

subject matter may vary, but students will<br />

always engage in extensive reading, writing, and<br />

discussion. Each student will present papers<br />

before the group. Prerequisite: acceptance into<br />

the Oxbridge Program. Successful completion <strong>of</strong><br />

the seminar is prerequisite to any tutorial.<br />

OXA 450. Senior Revisions. 1 or 2 cr. hrs.<br />

Instructor: Staff<br />

Independent reading by seniors in preparation for<br />

comprehensive exams—in Oxford or Cambridge<br />

terms, "revising" for examinations. The<br />

Coordinator <strong>of</strong> the Oxbridge major will approve<br />

the list <strong>of</strong> readings to be undertaken and will<br />

determine with the student what writing will be<br />

appropriate. Examples <strong>of</strong> writing assignments<br />

might include essays, annotated bibliographies,<br />

journals, or other assignments. Prerequisite:<br />

Good standing as a senior in an Oxbridge major.<br />

Tutorial Credits. Full credit for a tutorial,<br />

including a tutorial taken in England in the major<br />

subject, is achieved only when the collection<br />

(special examination) paper or related comprehensive<br />

examination papers have been completed.<br />

As credit hours are shown for the tutorials<br />

listed below, the first number indicates the credits<br />

earned when tutorial work is completed through<br />

the collection or comprehensive examination; the<br />

number in parentheses indicates the credits<br />

earned by tutorial participation and syllabus<br />

activities alone. A student who for any reason,<br />

including transfer out <strong>of</strong> the college or withdrawal<br />

from the program, satisfactorily finishes syllabus<br />

assignments and participates in tutorial sessions<br />

but does not finish the work <strong>of</strong> the tutorial<br />

by satisfactory performance on the collection or<br />

examination will have earned the number <strong>of</strong><br />

credit hours shown in parentheses. Prerequisite: a<br />

tutorial must be related to the comprehensive<br />

examination fields <strong>of</strong> a student’s Oxbridge major.<br />

Tutorials for Oxbridge Major in<br />

English Language and Literature<br />

OXE 106, 206. Poetry: Analysis and Critical<br />

Interpretation. 4 cr. hrs. A seminar/discussion<br />

course designed to help students interested in the<br />

Oxbridge English Language and Literature major<br />

develop the vocabulary and skills needed for analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> poetry and to introduce them to some important<br />

critical approaches to literature. It is a co-requisite<br />

<strong>of</strong> the first OXE tutorial course taken by a<br />

student exploring or entering the Oxbridge English<br />

Language and Literature major. Prerequisites: successful<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> OXA 100, concurrent enrollment<br />

in an OXE tutorial course.<br />

OXE 111, 211, 411. Realist Modes. 4 (2) cr. hrs.<br />
