<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> – Languages<br />
Total minimum semester credit hours: 19, 15 <strong>of</strong><br />
which must be completed in Japan.<br />
A grade <strong>of</strong> C- or better in all courses required for<br />
the minor.<br />
Minor in Spanish<br />
The Spanish minor is designed for students who<br />
would like to improve their communicative ability<br />
in Spanish, and to broaden their understanding <strong>of</strong><br />
the Hispanic cultures. The ability to communicate<br />
in Spanish will enhance career possibilities for students<br />
who are considering working in a variety <strong>of</strong><br />
human service fields, such as education, health,<br />
business and counseling. Spanish minors must complete<br />
16 hours <strong>of</strong> Spanish courses beyond Spanish<br />
211, and a minimum <strong>of</strong> 12 hours <strong>of</strong> those must be<br />
on the 300 level. One 300 level Spanish 320 course<br />
on campus is a requirement for completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />
minor in Spanish. A grade <strong>of</strong> C- or higher is<br />
required in each course to complete the minor.<br />
115, 215. Directed <strong>Study</strong>. 2-4 cr. hrs. For special<br />
cases only, primarily upper-class or transfer students<br />
who need partial credit to finish out the elementary<br />
or intermediate courses, or students who have valid<br />
scheduling problems. Prerequisites for 115: the<br />
equivalent <strong>of</strong> 111 and consent <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
Prerequisites for 215: the equivalent <strong>of</strong> 112 and<br />
consent <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
411, 412. Tutorial in French or Spanish.<br />
1-4 cr. hrs. Extensive directed study in an area <strong>of</strong><br />
special interest to the student, with preparation and<br />
presentation <strong>of</strong> reports. Prerequisite: consent <strong>of</strong> the<br />
instructor. Offered either semester as needed.<br />
French<br />
111. Elementary French I. 4 cr. hrs. A complete<br />
introductory college course in French covering<br />
the skills <strong>of</strong> listening, speaking, reading and<br />
writing French. Four class sessions per week plus<br />
one conversation session with French Assistant.<br />
Fall semester.<br />
112. Elementary French II. 4 cr. hrs. A continuation<br />
<strong>of</strong> French 111 using the same methods.<br />
Prerequisite: FRE 111 or its equivalent. In addition<br />
to class sessions with the instructor, there is one<br />
weekly conversation session with French Assistant.<br />
Spring semester.<br />
211. Intermediate French I. 4 cr. hrs. Review <strong>of</strong><br />
grammar and vocabulary <strong>of</strong> the beginning level with<br />
the addition <strong>of</strong> new elements and an emphasis on<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in the four language skills and culture.<br />
In addition to class sessions with the instructor,<br />
there is one weekly conversation session with<br />
French Assistant. Prerequisite: FRE 112 or its equivalent.<br />
Fall semester.<br />
212. Intermediate French II. 4 cr. hrs. A continuation<br />
<strong>of</strong> French 211 using the same methods. In<br />
addition to class sessions with the instructor, there is<br />
one weekly conversation class with the French<br />
Assistant. Prerequisite: FRE 211 or its equivalent.<br />
Spring semester.<br />
320. Special Topics in Francophone Literature.<br />
4 cr. hrs. This literature course will address various<br />
topics related to the history, civilization and literature<br />
<strong>of</strong> Francophone countries. Prerequisite: Any<br />
300 level French course. May be taken more than<br />
once under a different topic. Fall semester every second<br />
and third year.<br />
323. Introduction to French Literature. 4 cr. hrs.<br />
An integrated introduction to French literature for<br />
students with no previous experience in the field. A<br />
detailed study <strong>of</strong> literature relating to important<br />
moments in French history; study and practice <strong>of</strong><br />
techniques <strong>of</strong> literary analysis; review <strong>of</strong> selected<br />
grammar and sentence structure; and opportunities<br />
to speak French. Prerequisite: French 212 or equivalent.<br />
Fall semester.<br />
324. French Novel <strong>of</strong> the l9th Century. 4 cr. hrs.<br />
An integrated study <strong>of</strong> the French novel <strong>of</strong> the 19th<br />
century through selected, representative works; supporting<br />
study <strong>of</strong> the historical and cultural context<br />
<strong>of</strong> the 19th century; review <strong>of</strong> selected grammar and<br />
sentence structures; structured opportunities to<br />
speak French. Prerequisite: any 300 level French<br />
course. Spring semester, every third year.<br />
351. French Theatre <strong>of</strong> the 17th and 20th<br />
Centuries. 4 cr. hrs. An integrated study <strong>of</strong> French<br />
theatrical literature <strong>of</strong> the 17th and 20th centuries<br />
through selected, representative works; supporting<br />
study <strong>of</strong> the historical and cultural context <strong>of</strong> the<br />
17th century; review <strong>of</strong> selected grammar and sentence<br />
structures; structured opportunities to speak<br />
French. Prerequisite: any 300 level French course.<br />
