<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> – Communication<br />
380. History and Criticism <strong>of</strong> American Public<br />
Address. 3 cr. hrs. Historical and critical study <strong>of</strong><br />
significant American speakers, with analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
structure, content and influence <strong>of</strong> their works.<br />
Prerequisite: at least sophomore standing. For<br />
majors prerequisites include COM 210 and 215.<br />
Fall semester.<br />
390-397. Communication Activities. 0.5-4 cr. hrs.<br />
Designed for special activities. Credit may be<br />
obtained in debate, theatre, performance studies,<br />
radio, television, and writing, in addition to credit<br />
in regular courses. Activities and requirements<br />
must be planned in advance with the supervising<br />
staff member. Credit available each semester. Onehalf<br />
(0.5) credit hour is awarded for every four (4)<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> activity per week, one (1) credit hour for<br />
eight hours <strong>of</strong> activity per week, etc. A cumulative<br />
total <strong>of</strong> four (4) credit hours may be earned. COM<br />
390, Teaching Assistant, is variable credit <strong>of</strong> 1-2<br />
credit hours as determined by the instructor. All<br />
communication activities courses require the consent<br />
<strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />

400. Senior Seminar. 1 cr. hr. The capstone writing/research<br />
course in the communication core.<br />
Students will research and produce a paper <strong>of</strong> journal<br />
or convention presentation quality. The department<br />
recommends that COM 400 and COM 401<br />
not be taken in the same semester. Prerequisite:<br />
COM 215 and COM 368 required; COM 358 is<br />
recommended as a prerequisite, although it may be<br />
taken concurrently.<br />
401. Senior Recital. 1 cr. hr. The capstone performance<br />
course in the communication core. Students<br />
will research, write, and present a twenty-minute<br />
persuasive speech. Prerequisite: COM 210, 312.<br />
410. Communication Seminars. 2 cr. hrs. Topics<br />
to be announced in special interest areas prior to registration.<br />
Special interest areas may include such topics<br />
as Nonverbal Communication, Gender Studies,<br />
Advanced Debate and Modern Rhetorical Theory.<br />
Students may take more than one communication<br />
seminar. Offered upon demand.<br />
440. Electronic Media Senior Project. 2 cr. hrs.<br />
The capstone project for the communication major<br />
with an electronic media emphasis. The student produces<br />
a semester long project in conjunction with<br />
the campus radio station, <strong>Jewell</strong> 91.9 FM KWJC.<br />
Responsible for all facets <strong>of</strong> the project, students typically<br />
focus on radio station underwriting, promotions,<br />
management, public relations, and programming.<br />
This course is taken in either the fall or spring<br />
semester <strong>of</strong> the senior year. Prerequisites: COM 240,<br />
241, 340, 341, and consent <strong>of</strong> the instructor.<br />
475. The World <strong>of</strong> Theatre V. 3 cr. hrs. An integrated<br />
course exploring theatre history (Early 1950sthe<br />
present, Native America), dramatic literature,<br />
dramatic criticism, and directing/acting theory; <strong>of</strong>fers<br />
praxis in directing acting (original ten minute play),<br />
in technical theatre design (all elements), and in<br />
writing (collaborative ten minute play and final draft<br />
<strong>of</strong> journal article). Spring semester.<br />
477. Senior Theatre Comprehensives 3 cr. hrs.<br />
A synthesis tutorial in which theatre majors prepare<br />
to take the senior theatre comprehensive exam, a<br />
combination <strong>of</strong> praxis, essay, and objective tests that<br />
assesses the students’ knowledge <strong>of</strong> content, as well<br />
as ability to synthesize content in coherent, sophisticated<br />
essays. Prerequisites: Complete all theatre<br />
course work in the theatre major with the possible<br />
exception <strong>of</strong> the Senior Theatre Performance.<br />
479. Senior Theatre Performance. 3 cr. hrs. A capstone<br />
theatre performance for theatre minors, communication<br />
majors with a theatre emphasis, theatre<br />
education majors and theatre majors. The student<br />
artist directs, technically designs, and acts a major<br />
role in the theatrical production <strong>of</strong> a full length play.<br />
The course is usually taken in the senior year.<br />
Prerequisites: COM 271, 372, 373, 374, 475, and<br />
272-279, acting in a major fall or major spring production,<br />
and permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />
490. Communication Internship. 2-6 cr. hrs. The<br />
internship is designed to help students make the<br />
transition from formal academic study to actual<br />
workplace situations. The intent is to match students’<br />
career goals with an appropriate cooperating<br />
organization in order to provide increased learning<br />
