<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> – Languages<br />

works are studied in their historical and cultural<br />

contexts. The course content is divided into two<br />

sections which are taught in alternate years. Section<br />

A focuses on Hispanic civilization and literature<br />

before 1800, and section B focuses on the 19th and<br />

20th centuries. Students may take both sections <strong>of</strong><br />

this course in consecutive years for a total <strong>of</strong> 8 credit<br />

hours. The course emphasizes writing skills and<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> clarity and accuracy in both<br />

written and spoken Spanish. Prerequisites:<br />

Prerequisite: at least 2 hrs. in intermediate Spanish<br />

courses beyond SPA 211 or equivalent.<br />

323. Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Spanish Literature. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

An introduction to the study <strong>of</strong> important literary<br />

works within the context <strong>of</strong> the major political<br />

and social developments within Spain, and the<br />

great literary movements <strong>of</strong> Europe. The course<br />

will include works from Middle Ages, Golden<br />

Age, and 19th Century. Prerequisites: SPA 320 or<br />

permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

324. Masterpieces <strong>of</strong> Spanish-American<br />

Literature. 4 cr. hrs. An introduction to the study<br />

<strong>of</strong> important literary works <strong>of</strong> Spanish America<br />

within the context <strong>of</strong> the major political and social<br />

developments, and the influence <strong>of</strong> the great literary<br />

movements <strong>of</strong> Europe. The course will focus on the<br />

novel, short fiction, and some poetry. Prerequisite:<br />

SPA 320 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

325. 20th Century Spanish Theater. 4 cr. hrs.<br />

A presentation <strong>of</strong> the major trends in twentieth century<br />

Spanish theater through the reading <strong>of</strong> a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> significant plays. The plays will be studied in<br />

their social and artistic contexts. Prerequisites: SPA<br />

320 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

326. <strong>Study</strong> <strong>of</strong> Don Quixote. 4 cr. hrs. An in-depth<br />

study <strong>of</strong> the character <strong>of</strong> Don Quixote, and analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> Cervantes’ narrative technique. The course will<br />

require reading <strong>of</strong> the novel in a version which<br />

retains many archaic forms <strong>of</strong> speech, as well as<br />

selected contemporary critical works. Prerequisites:<br />

SPA 320 or permission <strong>of</strong> instructor.<br />

327. Advanced Oral and Written Spanish.<br />

4 cr. hrs.This course is designed to refine speaking<br />

and writing skills through discussion <strong>of</strong> topics related<br />

to Latin America, the United States and Spain.<br />

Compositions related to these topics will enhance<br />

writing pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Spanish.Prerequisite: at least 2<br />

hrs. in intermediate Spanish courses beyond SPA<br />

211 or equivalent.<br />

328. Advanced Grammar and Introduction<br />

to Spanish Linguistics. 4 cr. hrs. Introduces students<br />

to the study <strong>of</strong> the systems <strong>of</strong> Spanish: syntax,<br />

phonology, lexicon and morphology and language as<br />

a social construct. Regional varieties <strong>of</strong> Spanish spoken<br />

in Spanish, Latin America and the US as well as<br />

Spanish in contact with other languages will be considered.<br />

Prerequisite: at least 2 hrs. in intermediate<br />

Spanish courses beyond SPA 211 or equivalent.<br />

350, 450. Internship in Spanish.1 cr. hr. Spanish<br />

majors in their junior or senior year may take an<br />

internship for a maximum <strong>of</strong> one credit hour. The<br />

exact nature <strong>of</strong> the internship experience will be<br />

worked out with the Spanish faculty and is subject<br />

to approval by the chair <strong>of</strong> the department.<br />

Internship credit may not be applied to credit for<br />

the major in Spanish.<br />

415. Hispanic Civilization and Literature:<br />

Senior Synthesis. 4 cr. hrs. This course is for the<br />

student whose major field is Spanish, and is the final<br />

course in the major sequence. The focus <strong>of</strong> the<br />

course is on synthesizing knowledge from previous<br />

courses into a broad historical and cultural framework.<br />

The emphasis <strong>of</strong> the course will be a major<br />

research project that incorporates works read in previous<br />

classes into a theme-based paper. Prerequisites:<br />

At least 16 hours <strong>of</strong> 300-level work in Spanish, 8 <strong>of</strong><br />

which must be on the WJC campus.<br />

Japanese<br />

See the section on “Language Minors” for information<br />

about a minor in Japanese Area Studies.<br />

111. Elementary Japanese I. 4 cr. hrs. A complete<br />

introductory course in college Japanese.<br />

Students learn to speak, read and write Japanese.<br />

112. Elementary Japanese II. 4 cr. hrs. A continuation<br />

<strong>of</strong> JPN 111 with an increased emphasis<br />

on reading and writing Japanese.<br />

211. Intermediate Japanese I. 4 cr. hrs. Further<br />

practice in speaking and reading Japanese. Basic<br />

skills in writing Japanese are introduced.<br />

Prerequisites: JPN 112 or the equivalent.<br />
