<strong>Courses</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Study</strong> –<br />
Business Administration and Economics<br />
All students planning to receive a B.S. or a B.A. in<br />
Business Administration will be required take the<br />
standardized comprehensive business pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />
examination during their senior year. Performance<br />
at a satisfactory level relative to national and institutional<br />
norms is a requirement <strong>of</strong> the degree. The<br />
student pays the cost <strong>of</strong> the exam.<br />
Transfer credit may be applied toward courses<br />
required in the major upon department review and<br />
approval. Credit awards will be decided on a case<br />
by case basis.<br />
First year students who plan to major in Business<br />
Administration are encouraged to take BUS 201:<br />
Organization and Management during the spring <strong>of</strong><br />
their first year.<br />
Minor in<br />
Entrepreneurial Leadership<br />
Students pursuing majors in other disciplines but<br />
with an interest in business/entrepreneurship may<br />
choose to minor in Entrepreneurial Leadership.<br />
The minor requires 18-19 credit hours <strong>of</strong> Leadership<br />
and Business. The minor consists <strong>of</strong> a 15 credit hour<br />
core <strong>of</strong> Leadership, Accounting and Business courses.<br />
Students must then choose one additional 3-4<br />
credit hour, approved elective (see below). Students<br />
pursuing a B.S. in Business Administration with an<br />
emphasis in Entrepreneurial Leadership are prohibited<br />
from taking this minor. Other Business majors are<br />
required to take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 3 courses totaling at<br />
least 9 hours that do not count towards their major.<br />
At least 9 hours must be completed in residence at<br />
<strong>William</strong> <strong>Jewell</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />

201. Organization and Management.3 cr. hrs. An<br />
introduction to the basic functional areas <strong>of</strong> an<br />
organization, such as economics, accounting, marketing,<br />
management, finance, and human resources.<br />
The course emphasizes basic decision-making skills<br />
and introduces the student to business case analysis<br />
and reporting. The external and internal environment<br />
<strong>of</strong> the organization, as well as the impact <strong>of</strong><br />
management decision-making on the organization<br />
will be discussed. Teamwork is a significant component<br />
<strong>of</strong> the course. Prerequisite: None.<br />
231. Business Law I. 3 cr. hrs. Contracts, agency,<br />
employment, sales. Prerequisite: sophomore standing.<br />
Fall semester.<br />
232. Business Law II.3 cr. hrs. Corporations, partnerships,<br />
negotiable instruments, bailments, real<br />
and personal property. Prerequisite: sophomore<br />
standing. Spring semester.<br />
301. Human Resources Management. 3 cr. hrs.<br />
An examination <strong>of</strong> the complete cycle <strong>of</strong> human<br />
resource activities. This course surveys the key functions<br />
<strong>of</strong> human resources focusing on the integration<br />
<strong>of</strong> corporate strategy into human resource activities.<br />
Prerequisite: BUS 201.<br />
302. Organizational Behavior. 3 cr. hrs.<br />
Organizational behavior is the systematic study <strong>of</strong><br />
the actions and attitudes that people exhibit within<br />
work-related organizations. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the<br />
study <strong>of</strong> organizational behavior is to enhance individual<br />
and organizational performance. This course<br />
examines the theories and skills necessary to understand<br />
and manage human behavior in business<br />
organizations, concentrating on: motivation, job<br />
attitudes, communication, leadership, teams, organizational<br />
culture and organizational development.<br />
Prerequisite: BUS 201.<br />
