<strong>College</strong> Wide<br />
95. <strong>Study</strong> and Learning Strategies. 1 cr. hr. This<br />
course is designed to increase students’ awareness <strong>of</strong><br />
learning processes and to increase classroom learning<br />
effectiveness. Students will learn about various<br />
techniques in reading, test taking, time managing,<br />
note taking and studying. The students will be<br />
using their best techniques in current courses.<br />
Elective credit only.<br />
96. Efficient Reading. 1 cr. hr. A reading course<br />
designed for improving college-level reading rate,<br />
comprehension, and vocabulary. Emphasis will be<br />
on rate improvement; however, techniques will<br />
increase concentration and make textbook reading<br />
more effective. Elective credit only.<br />
98. Career Explorations. 1 cr. hr. A course<br />
designed to build confidence, insight and skills in<br />
career decision making, Career Explorations incorporates<br />
a variety <strong>of</strong> self-assessment tools. The<br />
emphasis <strong>of</strong> the course is placed on exploring oneself<br />
in relation to compatible vocations. Time management,<br />
class selection, resume preparation, interviewing,<br />
and issues pertaining to success in college are<br />
also addressed. Enrollment is limited to first-year<br />
students and sophomores. Elective credit only.<br />
99. Orientation to the Job Search. 1 cr. hr. A<br />
course designed to provide insight and prepare<br />
students to manage an effective job search upon<br />
graduation, Orientation to the Job Search incorporates<br />
a high degree <strong>of</strong> self-assessment and exposes<br />
students to the world <strong>of</strong> work and methods <strong>of</strong><br />
career research. Resume preparation, interviewing,<br />
and networking are emphasized. Enrollment is<br />
limited to juniors and seniors. Prerequisites: None.<br />
Elective credit only.<br />
220. <strong>Study</strong> Abroad Orientation. 0 cr. hrs.<br />
Designed to help students prepare themselves for<br />
their study through a <strong>William</strong> <strong>Jewell</strong> <strong>College</strong> study<br />
abroad program. One weekend session provides<br />
context for assigned reading and exam. Included<br />
will be academic advising; pre-departure essentials<br />
such as information on travel, housing and communication,<br />
money, packing, health and safety; policies<br />
and procedures; cultural education; panels <strong>of</strong> former<br />
study abroad students. Passing grade required for<br />
final admission into a study abroad program.<br />
Pass/fail grading. Prerequisite: Acceptance for study<br />

through a WJC study abroad program or interest in<br />
applying in the future.<br />
Geography<br />
304. Economic Geography. 4 cr. hrs. This course<br />
will provide an understanding <strong>of</strong> the five themes <strong>of</strong><br />
geography with a heavy emphasis placed on economics.<br />
How and why we teach economics and<br />
geography will be an underlying theme as the course<br />
unfolds. Potential geographic topics will include:<br />
location, place, movement, and regions. Potential<br />
economic topics will include political economics,<br />
population, resources, transportation, urban land<br />
use, and industrial location. Prerequisites: none.<br />
Geology<br />
201. Earth Science. 4 cr. hrs. A study <strong>of</strong> atmosphere,<br />
hydrosphere and lithosphere. Such topics as<br />
weather, climate, space, rocks, minerals, and streams<br />
are covered. This laboratory course meets the<br />
requirement for teacher certification. Methodology <strong>of</strong><br />
teaching is audio-tutorial. No prerequisites.<br />

Science<br />
101. Integrated Sciences<br />
for Elementary Educators. 4 cr. hrs. This course is<br />
designed to use an integrative approach to introduce<br />
pre-service elementary education students to<br />
the main aspects <strong>of</strong> the physical and life sciences<br />
and how to integrate these scientific principles into<br />
everyday life and events. Students will use an<br />
inquiry and problem-solving approach in the<br />
course, which includes designing and conducting<br />
experiments, seeking out connections between the<br />
sciences, and applying what they learn to the elementary<br />
school setting. Students will present their<br />
findings through written and oral formats.
